Hi

Anything I should be wary of when the weather is fucking freezing outside with hydraulic brakes?

This morning the brake was fucking shit, but the way back it was fine. Was well cold though and had to scrape the ice off the bike again.
I don't even - surely fluid can't freeze? I was braking a bunch before hitting the proper road to try and warm it up, but at one point I could pull the lever all the way into touching the grip.

Seems the cap has come a little loose and needs tightening - I Imagine moisture would seep in and fuck it right up? Mechanic did the front brake about a month or two ago

Also got an indicator lense because it was smashed, screwed it on, get to work. it's gooooooooooooone Crying or Very sad Was gonna super glue it on but forgot Rolling Eyes

What cap was loose?

Sounds like you had spongy brakes. You need to get them checked out. Not sure what you mean by loose cap, were the brakes leaking fluid? Did the mechanic leave something loose? Would it be possible that someone may have tampered with your bike?

Seriously I would not recommend you ride the bike until the brakes have been checked out.

The brake reservoir cap, as it was drilled out and bodge screwed together

Spongy brakes it is then. I thought him stripping and new seals would have solved it?

Nah i'll ride it, got work innit Laughing

Rubber seals in the master cylinder shrunk just enough to let fluid seep past?

Probably not, just shooting the breeze.

Are you saying your brakes are held together by tape and wishful thinking, then wondering why they're not razor sharp? Wink

Reservoir cap /= brakes
It was screwed on with washers actually and was tight to begin with Thumbs Up

Tape and wishful thinking may be the next step though Laughing
I don't want razor sharp, I just want functional, does have EBC pads as if they make much of a difference other than probably wearing quicker

No fluid can't freeze, ever in fact that is the main requisite of fluid is that it doesn't freeze, it is why lakes etc don't freeze over..

Brake fluid can freeze, in these temps no I would put it down to you being shit and therefore your bike being shit Thumbs Up

Brake fluid doesn't freeze in Norway at -35, so why would it freeze in the UK at -2?

Replace the fluid, and if you can't manage that simple task yourself, I recommend paying a mechanic to do it before you die on the bike.

Or die, either way I guess...

My friend noticed his brakes were a little spongy recently and decided with this extra cold, wet and miserable weather he needed tip top razor sharp brakes.

He bled them, had a massive improvement. First ride out he applied as much front brake as he normally would, locked it and slid his er6 down the road.

I can imagine this to be an alpha thing to do, in the nicest possible way.

Had crossed my mind bro Thumbs Up

OK so update!
Mechanics was closed - and it was J&C in barwell, he's a good dude, I think it's the shitty resevoir screw drilling out and sealing up which my mate did causing the seepage of moisture...

Anyway!
So mechanics was closed, winter opening times, opened the reservoir cap to find - slush! Little bit of fluid and an icy sludge... so scraped it out and topped up the fluid, brake works but isn't amazing

Will see how it is tomorrow morning, I've resealed the reservoir with "tape and goodwill"

Safety nazis will love I rode it to work and back today Laughing
Honestly I think its ok but not as good as I'd like it, it's probably minimal

Much better now I've put more fluid in and got the slosh out lol, hoping the tape will keep the frosty leak out

This basically needs to be done Thumbs Up

So you've now got watered down brake fluid?

I'd be inclined to drain the lot, add new and bleed the system.
It's really not that complicated, even I manage to do it.

Me, who go distracted & picked up the brake fluid before continuing to add a capful into my coolant reservoir.
Fun times Embarassed

Don't be stupid, get the brakes sorted. I'd bleed and replace all the fluid if it was me.

Bleeding brakes on a motorcycle is a piece of piss. It sounds so much more daunting than it actually is, honestly.

If you had linked ABS brakes like my Varadero does you would have a VERY different opinion.
