For shits and giggles I'm looking at dropping some R6 cams into my FZ6.

Got some bloke on another forum saying that I need new buckets as the cams and buckets work harden as a pair.

Never heard of this before.

What's the cack with using second hand cams and mixing and matching this stuff?? Anyone ever had any issues?

I would not worry about the buckets

You will need to re shim
You may need a power commander and dyno runs different cams will mess up the fueling but it may still be in range of the closed loop

Just wondering what you want to achieve by doing this?

Once upon a time it might have caused some problems but Japanese build tolerances are now so good you can even buy a single cam cap*. I doubt there would be any need to replace buckets.

I'd suggest if your cam lobes/buckets are wearing appreciably, you have bigger problems.

I swapped out the cams on my VFR for a set of second hand ones of a different spec model four years apart and had to buy TWO new shims (out of 16).

I wonder if what he was meaning/heard was you should ordinarily try to keep the same bucket and shim in the same place on the head if you want to avoid having to re-jiggle the shims every time you have the head off due to small variations in thickness? You'll have to re-shim it anyway if you're swapping out the cams (or maybe not if you're lucky?)

*It used to be that they were through-drilled in place on the head and if you cracked a cam cap, your whole head was scrap. Now they are well enough made you can just replace one.

I bet a pound coin to a pinch of shit that he's in his 50's or older. That used to be the case but not any more.

Edit: I see Stinkwheel has already said as much. Carry on.

That's fine he sounds like he's a bit old fashioned. I think he was referring to the days when he used to race American V8's lol.

Got a power commander and only doing it as a hopefully cheap and effective mod to get a few more Hp.

Thanks for the replies!

Is your Fazer the Ally framed one, or the steel framed one?

2002 would be the tubular steel frame jobbie, so (unless I'm mistaken) that's the old Thundercat engine, not the R6 derivative?

That's what I'm getting at. R6 cams will not fit the Thundercat engined derivative. Thundercat cams are the same as Fazer cams IIRC.

Big giveaway.
