I ride an XJ6. Its super practical and I enjoy it. I'm on it every day about town visiting clients. Would a sportsbike be all right with the same use?

Cheers

I manage fine with a CBR600F. Quick, handles well, pretty comfortable. If I am careful it returns decent MPG. Thumbs Up

This.

CBR600F, no problem. Ducati 748... Maybe not.

It will be fine, probably not as comfortable though.

I commuted 55 miles each way on my ZX6R for about a year and it was absolutely fine. Did the job no problem.

Why are you considering one?

I'd consider 1990's scabby sports bike for a daily commuter, better still if it had the fairing lowers ripped off.

Problem for me is that you just can't get into all the areas to keep a nice clean taken pride in sports bike clean during the winter.

If the bike was also my summer ride out machine and was in great condition with smart plastics, then no I could not do sports bike for commuter.

Maybe if you have a best bike and scabby version for winter hacking it could work though?

My 2001 cbr6 isn't the sportiest thing going but it has been my daily ride since 2009. I do worry about it getting nicked though, mainly because like flies, chavs are attracted to yellow sports bikes.

Depends, the exup valve on my YZF-750 used to constantly seize up due to the constant commuting (and therefore not being thrashed) I did on that bike.

If your going to use a sports bike for a regular ride, pick a simple one.

I liked the GSXR1000 for daily town stuff - shopping, commuting etc.
If I could justify the cash and had a need for a 'get around' bike, I'd go for a CBR1000RR or S1000RR (ideally HP4, of course).

so you have a bike you are happy with and it suits your needs.
why do you need to change bikes?
if its just because you do(a valid reason)then why not try a few on?
only you can say whats best for you so do it.
some people ride round the world on an r1 and some people do track days on a gs.
get whatever you want and enjoy it.

A older GSXR 750 would be a cracking commuter. Just don't park outside a motorcycle clothing shop with it.

I had a cbr600f 2nd gen model for about five years used it as my everyday bike. I used it for the local twisty roads and I would commute on it and did a few trackdays on it.

Don't currently use the ZX6 for work but have done in the past for extended periods and fairly long journeys on a weekly basis; travel/transport wise it was absolutely practical; much quicker and cheaper most of the time too.

If you manage it on the XJ6 I can't see why it would be any different on a sport - perhaps more fun Razz? The only downside for me and the main reason I don't bike it currently is issues with changing/storing/turning up in gear not being appropriate.

I'll be in a similar position to you next year, and I THINK I've decided on my next bike.

2000-2002 Kawasaki ZX9R

Comfy for a sports bike
Missing the gearbox issues the early ZX9's had
Enough power and torque to have triple figure fun on and comfortably tour
Swap out the 6 pots for 4 pots off a CBR, 6 pots are said to be decent brakes when fully functional, but need regular maintenance.
Keep onto of cleaning / acf50 through winter as they rust easily apparently.
Can be picked up for around £1,700 for a half decent example

You did say 600/750, well a ZX9R will probably be putting out the same BHP as a modern gsxr 750 (albeit less torque and the ZX9 will most likely be heavier).

I haven't done a lot of research and the above is from online searches, so could all BS but, on the whole ZX9R's seem decent as a sports bike commuter & I know I'll defo' be considering it as my next bike.

Commuting on an E1 model ZX9R (albeit tuned and lightened with race suspension) convinced me a sports bike was the best option for tight town commuting, after trying a variety of options.

I was thinking in the past of having a 636 as a second bike for weekend fun. But thinking if I could use one for work as well could have a newer sportsbike as my only bike. Only if its practical for through the week town riding.

Why not just sell the current bike, buy a 636 and use it for weekend fun and work Razz. To be honest i've never used a 'commuter' bike, racked up with top-boxes and other luggage etc properly; although i could of worked something out on the ZX6 if I had to.

The ZX6 has done everything i've ever needed it to so far though. Its purely 'off-the-bike' problems with changing etc that have currently stopped me commuting on it; which would apply to any bike. I've never had any issues using it for town-commuting which was generally going through bristol rush hour, amongst other hectic areas.

No idea on the value of your XJ, but you could end up a lot better off, or at least breaking even by selling it and buying an older 636 for everything instead of buying a second/new bike possibly?

I think if I was going to get a bike just for commuting so I could save the Zed for fun riding I would just get a little cb250cc or similar.

Do it.

But do it properly, so that means an R1 rather than an R6, etc etc etc. Wink
