What's the difference between an S1 and S2? My local Yamaha dealer has an S2 and although they apparently look identical they're utterly separate bikes. (Also could be sales bollocks).
Searching I find lots of foreign sites talking about them but I can't work out what they're saying. |

Check the Yamaha website it has a Fazer history. Basically it's this:
2007 Upgraded model named “S2” features:
• Diamond shape aluminium swingarm
• Monobloc, 4-piston type front brake calipers
• Aluminium, bolt-on type passenger footrest brackets
• New instrument panel.with analog rpm counter
• New seat texture
S2 also has a black forks and a slightly different fairing.

Most of the changes are above.
Couple of other things, you won't find a 78hp one in this country So don't worry about that.
There are a few further differences between the two. I've got an S1.
S2 has better brakes, S2 has a better dash (bbut they can be swapped between the two bikes), S2 has adjustable forks as well which is nice. They also have a slightly different fuel tank.
Downsides are that there are additional cats in the exhaust headers so to get a true cat less system you have to replace the headers with the earlier ones. Also the bike runs a lambda sensor on the s2.
Out of the two for general road riding you won't notice much of a difference I wouldn't expect. The better brakes and nicer dash on the later model was my preference but I just bought the best bike for the money at the time was an S1. Paid 2500 for my 06 with 6k miles 2 years ago, with a scorpion exhaust, crash bungs, power commander and custom map and alarm.
They make good bikes, a power commander and an exhaust with a good map and they'll keep up with 90% of the pre 06 sports bikes. I've got a video of me out accelerating a zx6r on the track.
The only thing I've added to mine is a quick shifter to go with the power commander ( which is awsome btw).
It's never gone wrong or cost me any money, other than a new set of tyres.
Currently looking at putting some R6 cams in for a laugh but don't know if I'll bother.
I say go for it. ____________________ CBT Passed: 30/08/2009, Theory Passed: 31/08/2010, Mod 1 Passed: 6/9/2010, Mod 2 Passed: 13/09/2010. Restriction ended 13/09/2012.

Was wrong about the adjustable forks - was the facelift FZS that got those.
Picture comparing the S1 and S2 headers. Pretty obvious where the cats are in the S2 headers:

Looking at those two exhaust manifolds side by side, my brain says the catalyst equipt ones look better flowing once you have smashed out the cat innards that is?
I'm glad that later FZ6's got the 4pot brakes that they should have always had. I do think these are great bikes and probably the successor to the mk1 Honda Hornet for a middleweight hoonigan bike?
Shame the forks are non adjustable, but I wonder if any R6 suspension bits would fit?
Oh and does anyone else think the FZ6 could make a good poor mans Street triple? |
