Hi,

Title says it all I think. On my way to work this morning the bike suddenly stopped. I was on reserve for 25 miles but usually it can go to 50 easily so that's strange.
Anyway I pushed the bike to the nearest parking, and continued my commute on the tube.
It never happened to me before so I'm wondering what's the usual procedure for situations like that, do petrol stations let you fill up a bottle or something? Are there any stations at all in central london? Mr. Green

Most petrol stations sell 5 litre plastic jerrycans (at an inflated price).

The usual procedure is to hang your head in shame whilst pushing your bike to the nearest petrol station. Razz

No I don't have any AA membership but I didn't know they covered this anyway Mr. Green
My bike is parked near liverpool street station, I've looked up the nearest station seems to be almost a mile away I guess it's doable but I'll probably be faster just walking and coming back with a jerrycan :/

I rated it funny because it is Very Happy

When I switch to reserve, the destination becomes a petrol station.

Enjoy the push or the walk of shame Razz

Yep, happened twice on my VFR - my mates kept changing it to reserve to when it chugged to a stop it was already completely out.

I just had to push it to the next petrol station! Lolz

If you walk to get a jerry can of petrol then you won't learn as much from the experience as you would by pushing your bike to the petrol station. Wink

Doubt it.

In civilised latitudes, if you start pushing it then a friendly bikey-bike-matey-biker-bro will stop to see if you're OK, then you can guilt him into doing a run to the nearest petrol station and buying you a plastic can of fuel for which he'll ask £10 even though it cost nearer to £15 because British.

In London, you'll be lucky if a gang of pedbois don't fall on you like hyenas and foot-push it away.

Sleep well.

If you get the train to the nearest petrol station, and then hop back on with a jerry can, I think you'll learn your lesson veerrry quickly Laughing Laughing

Sorry rogerborg, when I say reserve I meant just the F-trip or whatever it's called.
Actually some biker stopped next to me and I thought I was saved but then it was a courrier and he was just stopping there to deliver something.

I already had a good push&walk of shame this morning to get to the closest parking so I think I'll pass on this one and just get the bus to get the petrol Surprised

At least you were in "civilisation"

Once had the good fortune to run out of fuel on the motorway directly opposite services with only six lanes of carriagway to cross. Unbolted the petrol tank and ran.........Of course I quickly learned never to put three gallons of fuel in a tank when you are trying to outrun 70 mph+ traffic Shocked Shocked Shocked

Not sure about the H&S legal issues about taking fuel on a train so probably best to buy a 'bag for life' and hide the fuel can just in case:) Thumbs Up

FJ1200 electric reserve. It was bloody notorious for leaking all the fuel through so when you switched to reserve there was non left.

Caught me out a couple of times so I kept a corona bottle full of fuel in my panniers for long distances just in case.

I like mechanical reserves though, just run until you run out then switch over and stop at the next petrol station. Thumbs Up

My Trophy has a fuel gauge, a count down computer telling me how many miles I can go till I next need to fill it, a warning light which becomes a flashing warning light when the level drops even lower.

I just know I'll run out at some time Laughing

I just buy the cheapest drink in 1.5-2L pet bottle, have a sip, pour the rest on to the ground and fill it with petrol. No one ever told me a thing, they always took the money and said have a nice day.

Well, I am not sure how nice people in the UK actually are though. Thumbs Up

EDIT: I have ran out of petrol only once, I pushed the CB-1 3 miles in direct sun, 30°C+ in the shade, never again I have had said. Always use the ON position, when I have to go on RES, I find the petrol station right away. The ZXR is 240kg or so with very low handle bars, you just do not want to try to find out, how cool would it be, if you had to push it.

I can imagine the UK petrol station manager doing this:

That happens just rolling onto their forecourt with the barefaced cheek of wearing a helmet.

Solenoid reserves are great when they work, and infuriating when they don't. Speak from experience that the RAC will save you. Might take forever if they are busy with flat batteries.

Worked in a service station and plastic bottles for fuel are absolutely not allowed no matter how many obscenities the punters scream at you Shocked Shocked Shocked Rolling Eyes

Problem is the fuel actually melts the plastic so the fuel filled 3 litre Coke bottle in your boot becomes a 3 litre puddle of fuel in your boot.
Of course the dissolving plastic mixing with the fuel probably isn't all that healthy for the clean running of your engine.

Best advice as has been mentioned here is to look out for a petrol station as soon as you go onto reserve.

Best advice is don't let the fuel level get to low in the first place.

But if it does happen then thumb a lift and buy a jerry can.

It takes hours/days for the fuel to melt the bottle.
Also, you won't be running the bike on fuel from a pet bottle on regular basis. You just get enough fuel to get to the nearest fuel station.
