i cant believe the cheek, i was happily filtering down a looooooooooooooooooooooooooooong queue, with plenty of room between me and the right hand lane when i here none other than the fuzz, well at first i thought it was just some check or something general, but when he said if i catch you doing that again i will have you..... Twisted Evil well!!!! i mean i see the police bikes doing it on the promenade every day. This must have been about 6 months ago now, and i also saw someone else get pulled yesterday.

I once had an unmarked traffic car flash his popup 'police' sign at me whilst filtering through stationary traffic on the Huntingdon bypass. Given that he was stuck right in the middle of about 5 miles of stationary vehicles, I made sure to wave on my way past. Smile

It IS legal BUT if you have a crash while doing it, It is 100% your fault.
My friend was filtering yesterday morning up to the red lights and as he reached the front of the que, The driver at the front didnt see him filtering and turned right and he rode straight into the side of her car.
I wasnt there, but from what he has explained, The driver of the car says it was all her fault and she openly admits that she should of checked before she turned. (Poor lass) even though it was purely my mates fault, He blames the car driver and she agrees with it.

Well if I get pulled for filtering safely I'll be telling what the officer to do ... Middle Finger .

It bet they really only pulled you because they were pissed off they couldn't.

Binge it is actually her fault as she should be looking if its clear or not, if it isn't clear you don't turn. It's not really his fault aslong as he was doing it safely but you do kinda ask for it, but life would be boring without risks Twisted Evil .

With the sensible head on, the best thing would be to ask what the problem is then calmly explain that you did not cross any solid white lines or cause any other road users to adjust their driving and as such were not breaking any laws or causing a hazard.

They will give you a producer and a load of waffle then send you on your way. If they get stroppy/bad attitude, write a letter of complaint to their boss.

Giving them the finger is liable to get you arrested on a trumped up charge under the criminal justice act (which pretty much bans you from being alive if the police decide they don't like your face).

Obviously, if you crossed a white line or passed on some zig-zags it is time to grovel.

Dunno they were doing some random checks on cars or something... Middle Finger Laughing

Over here it's illegal, but a lot of the bikes still do it. I've never known anybody to get pulled over for doing it either.

Your wrong.

If you have an accident and it's your fault then it's your fault. If someone performs a maneuver and fails to look and or signal and causes an accident it is their fault, this is called driving without due care and attention.

To the best of my knowledge, according to California law, local bikers can filter through stationary traffic as long as they don't overtake the car in front.

Been spied filtering through moving traffic once or twice, but never been pulled for it. Also been seen waiting at the front of the queue with a car on either side, but not while pulling out in front of them. Just to play it safe, if I pass a marked cop car on my way through, I'll pull in to the first space large enough to accomodate me and my bike. No sense pushing it... Wink

I agree with sickpup and I apeak from experience. I got knocked off whilst filtering by someone who pulled out on me on purpose to stop me getting past when filtering, he claimed to have indicated and it was my word against his, he got banned and I didn't.

My personal experience was when a driver pulled a U-turn in stationary traffic without indicating or checking his mirrors. I hit the side of his car.

After much discussion with his insurance company it went 50/50 (he paid half my costs and I half his). My damage was much more than his, on paper, so I got a fair enough deal. I probably could have pushed it further but insurance is sooo expensive I did not want to get my company involved at all.

Just goes to show though, don't give up if you think you were right, fight your corner with the other insurance company and you will do better than if you just leave alone (they wanted me to pay for everything!)

My tips , right or wrong .................when filtering , keep your speed to a MAX of 10 - 15 mph more than the speed of the queue . It is possible that you were pulled because you were filtering too fast ..? Without the neccessary attention ?? Its also a good idea on safety grounds - if you are only usinga speed diff of 10-15 mph. gives you loads more time to avaoid the pillock changing lanes .
Never filter if the speed of the queue is above 30 ...

when you reach the head of the queue pull about half a bike length in front of the front car ... that way you are more likely to be seen and not smacked by someone turning right ...

I too have filtered past cops here and in Europe and had absolutely no problem .......

I'd like to see a copper in London try and stop some courier bikes from filtering. It would most likely start a riot... Very Happy

My best filtering moment was when I was on the North Circular road in London, filtering behind two traffic policeman, between lanes 2 & 3. They were going at a 'regulation' 10-15mph. They both saw me in their mirror and pulled into lane 3 and waved me through! Amazing! Cool

Police on bikes tend to be good bikers and wont stop you for things like this. However try following a police car down a traffic jam when its got its sirens and lights going and see if they like it. lol. They only gave me a caution 'cos i was a learner. They didnt like it when I questioned how they had time to stop me if there was enough of an emergency to have the lights and noise on in a traffic jam though Laughing

It's a great way to cut through the traffic without the need for filtering Thumbs Up - Not sure the other motorists were too impressed though.

Done that as well! Same stretch of a the North Circular, a marked police car was carving out a nice fat juicy lane between lanes tow & three at 30mph. I kept pace, at a relatively safe distance, intil he flashed a sign - STAY AWAY! This was my signal to back off. Shocked

Have you never heard of the attitude test?

Pass the attitude test, and its amazing what you can get away with, but fail the attitude test, and thats when they WILL find something to nick you for.....just a word of advice, but ignore it at your peril Crying or Very sad
