Bought an Audi, specificly a 2000 A4 2.4 SE automatic (I doubt that makes a difference however)

DIS on the dashboard does this;

https://i.ebayimg.com/10/!BqEdGtQCGk~$(KGrHqIH-CwEu(6m(Ml2BLuMZCNd7g~~_35.JPG

I'd like it to do this (like it's supposed to);

https://www.clusterrepairsuk.co.uk/assets/img/homepage/customisation.jpg

I can't fix it myself as theres some horrificly scary soldering involved, does anyone have a reccomendation for somewhere that can sort very cheaply?

2 options for this from my quick look to sort mine.

Can try replacing the ribbon cable or the whole screen. Dodgy pixels is likely ribbon cable but dat solder. New screen is 100ish euros on some sites.

FWIW grab a £5 wired reader and use that to check error codes when you hear the big beep or you see the red (!) show up. Cheaper and most certainly easier.

I'd like mine to work, but nope, fuck that.

It's not as bad as you'd think, the magic ingredient is the Chemtronics flux pen that makes the solder flow nicely. Haven't done an Audi one but have done a couple of similar ones in Saabs.

B - A spacker with a tremor.

A is workable, B is the killer there I suppose.

Am happy to have a go at soldering it if the prep was done, but am away for the next 10 days. Have done worse before at work.

I have had to do this 3 times Laughing

Its fiddly but perfectly doable.

Pull it apart and look at it first. You may get lucky and find its one of the dashes with a plug in screen (IIRC B5's are plug in), then it's just a case of unplugging the old one and plugging in the 30 pond replacement.

I think they covered this exact issue on wheeler dealers, pop the screen out and put new one in, hardest bit is if it needs desoldering/resoldering rather than plugging in.

Whats the deal with the immobilser if I fuck this up?

Big concern is going for a fix and cabbaging the entire car as no doubt the ecu, keychip, transponder, gearbox ecu, and various other black boxes will need re-coding at a cost of a million ponds.

Or can I just rob a different dash cluster from breakers, then use vag com to sort the mileage out?

Fook me! People do like to make life hard/interesting for themselves by messing around buying 12-15year old complex loaded German premium and expecting to be able to fix the electronicy parts for 50p.

I'm scared of buying anything newer than 20years old, and for a daily driver id want as little std kit as possible.

What are all these 2010> cars going to be like in another 10years when the integrated sat nav, I-drive, dual zone climate control, self park, ESP shit all goes tits up? Laughing

Worst thing you can do is permanently fubar the LCD by lifting all of the tracks when you try and remove it.

Getting a second dash in is a big PITA.

If you are this worried get one of the eBay companies to do it for £100.

Corsa 1.0 - 16.0 secs/96 mph 57 bhp & you'll be lucky to find one with a radio. They've all done 100k+ at the hands of terrible drivers, and due to cheap insurance been thrashed by many 17 year olds. Does 40-45mpg.

Fiesta 1.3 Encore - 14.8 secs/96 mph/59 bhp & the same deal as the corsa.

A4 2.4 SE - 9.3 secs/137 mph 165 bhp. I get electric windows, electric mirrors, a ton of tasty leather, a decent sterio, climate control & some other stuff. The boot is like the fecking tardis (I ought to be able to fit at least three dead bodies in there) it does 25-30mpg & the ladies seem infinately more impressed with this than the 4x4 Laughing

However, buying a luxury motor for corsa money theres always going to be some small issues that need sorting. This one suffers from the traditional Audi DIS failiure, a slight oil leak on the rocker cover for the left cylinder bank, a loose heat shield on the exhaust and has a manual key rather than the standard flip key with remote central locking.

Instant gasket on the rocker, tighten heatshield, and we're laughing. If I can sort this, then I'll likely go ahead and get the DIS fixed propperly as its annoying me Laughing

Some other thread... "dickmunches had filled with flashing pics causing him to have a massive flip out at my desk"

I thought 'flip out' implied having a seizure or having an aura.

Confused

See my post in the Honda Civic thread in RB for the answer to that... Very Happy

It's never been any different, people have always been afraid of speccy cars, which is one of the main reasons why they drop like stones.

When I first started in the trade and even things we now consider basic equipment (like PAS and electric windows) were optional, most people didn't specify them, on the basis it was more to go wrong.

It was rare to sell the top spec version of any car then and price wasn't often the deciding factor.

I would actually be less worried about electronic fripperies like displays and power operated gizmos, it's essential stuff that costs fortunes to maintain, such as management sensors and ECUs.

Coupled with the cost of diagnostic equipment and the skills needed to use it properly and keeping your windows going up and down pales into insignificance, compared to making sure it starts every day.

Can see these points, but today it's not things like engine management ECU's we fear, (we need them to make awesome performance reliably), but it's all the integrated electronics, interconnected systems, safety and security features and such that are scary in secondhand cars as they get older.

I still like having stuff like stick on sat navs, non can bus wiring, no really complicated immobilisers and nothing automated that does not need to be like lights, windscreen wiper's etc.

The management stuff is what you should be afraid of.

It's very rare for me to replace things like electric window motors, central locking solenoids or alarm ECUs (except in Renaults) but oxygen sensors, MAF units and EGR valves are virtually a daily occurrence.

OK, you can buy more and more of this stuff from pattern suppliers, but the failure rate of non OE parts is way too high and some parts I wouldn't even entertain getting from anywhere other than the original manufacturer.

There are also companies springing up that can recondition 'sealed' ECUs (BBA Reman are brilliant and offer a lifetime warrany) but it's still a costly and time consuming exercise.

The other stuff fails so rarely, it's not often you can't pick up good working parts secondhand, even complex things like ignition transceivers and instrument clusters.

I understand things like various sensors can fail and not be particularly long lived either. But I was thinking of fairly simple engine management only ECU's, and particularly aftermarket parts which to a degree are often simpler and less interconnected than OEM factory stuff.

Things like Mega squirt, and even the more complex stand along ECU's like Emerald, Omex, Autronic etc, they compared to other computing devices are a lot simpler with less processor power etc.
If you think about tuned performance cars that run close to the edge of detonation and turbocharged engines that use lean spool mapping etc, then electronic engine management is the only way that you can achieve high performance and keep reliability reasonable.

Heard on the radio last week, some of the 2010+ 2l's Audi's have started guzzling a litre of oil every 100miles or something, due to poorly designed Pistons, and the owners having to throw toys out of prams and/or shell out £££ to get it fixed.
This supports my belief that the word "premium" which BMW and Audi often get branded with is just a load of overheated puffery.

Back in the mid 00's, I made a pact with myself to never buy an Audi or BMW, as it appeared to me then, that soon after purchase, some people appeared to develop a blight of arrogance, blindness and a supercilious manner towards other motorists, both in the pub and on the road. I don't want this happening to me Wink .

Mercs what I want when/if I get minted. Until then I'll probably stick with my low mileage Toyota.

But, good luck fixing your dash OP.
