Hi all.

Currently in the process of purchasing a house, at the very beginning stages.

It's a mid-terrace house hidden away in a cul-de-sac road. The place has two car parking spaces, one in front of the front door and the other just a few metres away in the corner between the neighbour's car and a hedge running parallel to the house.

Anyway - what I was thinking of doing was erecting (oo-er) some type of bike shed in the corner space. It's literally in the corner:

https://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y41/doovydoo/unnamed_zpsfc1d2530.jpg

How do you think, given that this is allocated and numbered parking (it has the house number on a sign on the fencing behind the space, behind the greenery), it would be with wanting to put a structure to house a motorbike on it?

On the legal side of things, I haven't seen the house deeds etc just yet, but have been told that space belongs to the house so is essentially part of our driveway. I'm sure it would be out of courtesy to the neighbours though to ask before we do put anything semi-permanent there....

Has anyone had any experience with this sort of thing at all? thanks Karma

What about an enclosed trailer? That would be a more normal kind of thing to keep in a parking space. Put it up on blocks with the wheels off.

I have a mate who did this with a caravan in his back garden when he couldn't get permission to build a garage.

You may need planning permission with it being at the front of the house.

Thinking

Storage / shipping containers are temporary structures for planning permission purposes.

I see. It's this kind of thing I'm thinking of:

If you cut back the greenery and stick it as far in the corner as you can I wouldn't regard it as a problem if it was me.

Check the deeds though. Make sure it IS yours and make sure there are no covenants dictating what you can or can't do.

My place is an ex council property and has a covenant that I can't park a caravan or boat on the drive Rolling Eyes

Of course the other problem is that would be a thief magnet round my way. Locked shed out of view of the house, wouldn't last a week. Evil or Very Mad

Still can get a ground anchor in there, the shed would be first line security and weather protection.

Pointless speculation is pointless without the docs.

A number on a wall is just that, it doesn't create ownership, and the seller or their agent may be mistaken - or 'mistaken' - and that could just be free-for-all common parking.

I mention this because my mother bought a house with an "allocated" space that turned out to be nothing of the sort when we looked into it. We installed a fold-down bollard anyway because it's more fun to stonewall the Cooncil than t'other way around.

Gotch'ya.

Yes, will get the deeds checked. It should come with the house, so yes... will look into it for sure.

It's a very, very quiet cul-de-sac area hidden away, with the house and driveway not in view from the road at all. The space is pretty much opposite the front door so it's in view of the house, could easily wire up a CCTV camera to front of the house to oversee it. Spare room overlooks the front too.

Pretty confident it's a safe location even with the bike under a cover, but would be nice to have it properly protected from the elements! The area is Borehamwood if anyone's interested. Cheers guys Thumbs Up

I've seen it done before in allocated parking spaces, but never out the front of the house.

Question you have to ask is how much attention you're going to attract. What's more likely to draw attention...

(1) A bike with a cover and shackles on it.
(2) A beaten up looking old garden shed that may well have just boxes and plant pots in it
(3) £1000 worth of brand new metal bike shed, the sort of thing that may well have an R1 or a Fireblade inside.

In my last house my bike was kept behind some 6ft solid gates at the side of the house. I thought about putting up a shed but figured it'd attract more attention than the bike which wasn't really visible unless you got on your knees and looked under the gates.

Can you be more precise? Postcode? House number? Hours that the place is typically unoccupied?

Fair enough.

I mentioned the area just to demonstrate that it's not in the rougher parts of London where I wouldn't even dream of leaving a bike outside Laughing

Is 2 that much better than 1? If they've got the means to get through a first Almax, surely the second is only going to mean seconds of difference? I don't really know, I've never stolen a bike or cut through a chain, but if you've got an angle grinder or gas axe, they're having your bike and 1 chain or 10 isn't making any difference.

I would think 10 chains would make a difference. If it takes 2 minutes for one chain then they will take at least 20 minutes for 10. The longer they take the bigger the risk of being court.

I'm not sure how the rules work. You can have a shed in your back garden no problem but in the front garden is not so easy.

All depends if someone complains or not I guess.

You'll need to check covenants as already stated, the parking space is not necessarily part of the property, it could be regarded as a communal space and you simply have use of it, even if it is yours there can still be restrictions on what you can and can't do with it. You should also contact planning department because the building will be freestanding and not attached to your house you won't legally get away with just putting it up, worst case though and you put it up without permission and a complaint is made you'd have to take it down and repair any damage to the paving.

The idea of a grounded horse box sounds well!

You may annoy the neighbours though!

I didn't know how long it'd take, but just looked at a few videos on YouTube, it does seem like a good chain will take a few minutes to cut through! Not to mention the noise.

An enclosed trailer has the bonus of being used as a trailer.
Can be a bit pricey though.

The trouble with a trailer with the wheels off is that trailer wheels are cheap to buy. So they measure up one night and then come back the next week and tow it away Thumbs Up

So perhaps look at removing the axle or the drawbar.

But to be honest if one of my neighbours left a fucked out old trailer with no wheels on their drive/ in a shared parking area I'd set fire to the fucking thing.

What someone chooses to keep on their driveway or in their allocated parking space is their business, isn't it? Confused
