Revitalising foothangers on the zr7 (99)

Bonjour everyone!
Well, the foothangers on the ZR7 are looking rather sorry for themselves so I have taken them off (a task in itself, the right foot hanger was a complete pain!), gave them a clean- first with soapy water and then white spirit, used a wire wheel drill attachment and decided I would use gunmetal plastidip and then use clear lacquer on top.

After the first coat, I was worried it wouldn't "stick":

Luckily it seemed to do the trick after a few coats (either second or third):

Both have had 4 coats on the front and 2 coats on the back of plasti dip. The one on the left has had a few coats of clear lacquer and the right one hasn't:

I am pleased with how they are turning out but hope they last a good while... time will tell.

Plastidip is designed to come off? that is a high friction area I expect the paint wont last refitting.

I would have used Hammerite then baked it off on in an 100 degree oven for a couple of hours. .
Did that to some car brake calipers some years back and they looked
great. The paint never so much as flaked even after a few Castle Combe trackdays.

The baking is the key IMO. As was the 10 or so thin coats.

I could coat my car in it, my friends wheels are also plastidip coated and they are directly sprayed on to. I'd not prime, I'd just spray it...its worked fine previously.

I would clean and spray, priming it defeats the point of it not being permanent.

You can often get away without primer with plastidip.

Also great for repairing torn carb diaphragms.

So after a short time the plasti dip was peeling on the left FH. I decided to peel it off and polish them as I imagined the wear and tear would eventually destroy spray paint so I have now polished them.

Here is a photo, I painted the little circle thing black (it was chome coated) and it was obvious they were 2 different type of metals.
