Could somebody identify how or why a previous owner might have damaged the outer rim of these forks where the dust seal sits? Confused

I'm assuming with it being confined to the outer rim, it shouldn't cause damage to any new oil seals at least?

Probably pitted pretty badly so he tried to clean them up so it's less obvious for you to see.

Do you mean the screwdriver marks in the top of the fork leg? It was because he used a screwdriver to pry the dust seal off Very Happy

Shouldn't affect the oil seal, wouldn't really expect it to affect the dust seal as long as the top edge allows the seal to sit flat.

I mean't the bits around the leg 'lip' not the sideways scratches over the pitting.
Although you are right, they did me up the wrong'un, wont be checking the next bike over in dusk!

For those craters in your fork legs.

Clean them out with white spirit and then fill them with fast drying Araldite. Smooth to correct profile and then your new seals might last longer than 10 minutes. Laughing

Aye it appears the previous owner got about 1500 miles out of the last set of seals, granted that was with a pillion.
I'm going to replace the fork stanchion in the picture, thankfully the right hand side one is nowhere near that level ...yet!

What grit sandpaper is recommended for sanding down bubbled up chrome initially?
I've tried 0000 wool but its not making an impact. Neutral

Now I might be making this up, but isn't the slow drying Araldite meant to be better for this job?

No experience of it myself but seem to remember reading that people have not had much luck with this using the fast drying stuff.

I agree that the slow cure araldite is used for this bodge, fsat drying stuff will fall out in no time. Especially if the area is washed in white spirit (leaves an oily residue behind).

To bodge it proper, use some brake cleaner to degrease the area, then fill the craters with 24 hour araldite. Allow to cure (24 hours) before rubbing back.
