Have you checked the bulbs?

Well, the bulb's OK and you're getting electricity to it.

I don't want to make assumptions though. Does your XTR have a manual switch for the lights, or is the headlight supposed to be always-on like on a CBR?

In the former case, a dose of WD-40, contact cleaner, isopropanol or whatever you have to hand would be my first resort. If that doesn't sort it, you're going to have to take the switch apart (carefully!) and see what's up. Having a basic multimeter with a continuity check feature will be a big help.

If it's supposed to be always on, then you'll be looking for a failed relay that's driven off the ignition or charging circuit. I don't suppose you've got a wiring diagram for your bike handy?

i was going to try that but i thought about it, when you hold the pass button in that is the hi beam isn't it? the hi beam light on the dash comes on, but turn the normal hesdlight on and nothing happens and swith the hi beam button on and still nothing happens, so why would the hi beam work through the pass button but not through the actual hi beam button? never been one for electrics lol

I agree, it sounds like the switch. Quite likely you do just have the one main fuse, as under the plastics you've got a CG copy-engine and a very basic bike.

Electrics can be tricky devils though, and I would urge you to get a basic multimeter and take a lot of the guesswork out. You only really need to use out two settings: 20Vdc and continuity.
