I'll be 19 in a few months and I'm planning on doing my A2, so I'll be needing a bigger motorised bicycle. Any recommendations or things to look for? My budget is about 2k and I'm looking at old VFR 400s. Thanks guys

How tall are you? I've always wanted an NC30 but at 6'1" they are bloody uncomfortable, I couldn't imagine more than the odd weekend blast if I had one. I've been told the NC24 is better for non-midgets though never had a go on one to find out.

Thought about a ZXR400? Brief look at eBay you seem to be able to get a better condition bike for your money. The Honda's both CBR (NC23 and NC29) or VFR (NC21, NC24 and NC30) seem to be asking high prices for tidy ones.

ER6. Likely to find more parts, they won't be thrashed as much as an old 400.

Agree with Paddy. ER6 (f or n) is a good step up and common, not grey import, not old and ragged, etc. Fairly light and flickable bike too.

Third'd!^

I've had a ride on the ER6F and it's a pretty decent bike, and would still be ok restricted for your A2 license.

Do you want the VFR400R for looks?
Or as a daily reliable commuter?
Or as a project bike?
Or finally as a high days and sunny days blast bike and or for track day frolics?

If your on a budget, something like a rotten or damaged 4-2-1 exhaust system replacement for these could really pull your pants down, or leave you without a bike to ride for a while.

Nothing wrong with nice old 400cc sports bikes, but to rely on one as a daily hack? Nah I'll pass!

Honourable mention for the Yamaha XJ-6. Very good for the starter rider, nice intro to the world of big bikes. So easy to corner with when the grip is there, almost does it for you.

Check the restriction method for A2, as the ER-6 HAD a simple screw for throttle restriction for 33BHP and there is only one position. That and a silly plug-in which limits torque or something.

If it's a throttle restriction, you won't be getting 47BHP, unless it's somehow been modified to suit, but I can't see how.

Other than that it's not a bad bike, though I've had good/bad things to say about it, it was my first big bike and I still have it after 2 years. Mainly because the wife uses it now.

XJ-6 is much smoother than the ER-6 (the power of 4 as virgin atlantic used to say), but when I had one for a day it was a chunk thirstier.

EDIT: Good old Kickstart Link but the tiny text in there says throttle linkage. Which as I say, is a screw, I would therefore be suspicious of getting anything more than 33BHP

Not surprised - power to weight ratio is not one of the XJ-6's strengths, if I'm honest. Does make you less likely to kill yourself when you fully open the throttle though! Which if you're used to a 125 is bloody useful. I enjoyed my 12,000 or so miles on it a lot before I outgrew it.

Replace stickers with CBR125R stickers, no one will ever know.
