 |
|
What's going on guys.
So I am highly considering a new exhaust system for my Honda NSR125 (JC22). I have found an Ebay seller who is selling a full Giannelli System for about £160 (including postage).
Here is the advert: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/181182813152?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2648&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
The reason behind the new system is obviously to reduce weight, as the original weighs a ton. Improve performance, sound and looks.
Anyone else used Giannelli on there NSR or have any feedback.
I have attached the expansion chamber and carbon silencer - however I believe it is extra for the carbon edition. The chamber is made from mild steel I believe.
My other option is that there is a Portugal Ebay Seller who is offering to make me a custom system for the price of £225. This include a full stainless steel expansion chamber and this silencer.
Here is the advert: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/301544699014?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2648&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
Just looking for some opinions and advice.
Thanks |

You don't need stainless steel exhaust for a two stroke. The exhaust system will outlive the engine.
Also, if you want to play with numbers, the stainless steel one would be heavier than a regular steel exhaust. If you use the same carbon fiber composite silencer on it, which is cheap actually. ____________________ '87 Honda XBR 500, '96 Kawasaki ZX7R P1, '90 Honda CB-1, '88 Kawasaki GPz550, MZ 150 ETZ

Hi,
i'd go for the giannelli, simply because it has proven results.
as much as i like those portugese spanny's, they are a bit of an unknown quantity.
pay as much as you can afford. so 60 quid to go stainless would be worth it imo.
mild steel v stainless? stainless steel every time. why? (when i have a mild steel jolly moto) simply because the steel used is very thin, (hence the 10kg less it weighs over oem) & the mild steel rusts...quickly so has to be treated/painted quite often.
if you werent in the damp uk, mild steel/ss wouldnt be an issue but 1 winter untreated in this country & mild steel will turn to rust.
forget the comments about the exhaust outliving the engine(made in jest, i presume) , the nsr has one of the most reliable 2t engines out there. trust me, i know.
you pays your money & you take your chances. me? i'd stick with the exhaust that has a proven track record & setting it up shouldnt be too much of a problem.
they portugese exhausts might be brilliant, in portugal but weather makes a big difference to the running of a 2t, & there are dyno prints of nsr's fitted with giannelli, arrow & jolly moto exhausts but none available for the portugese ones.
if i was selling a hand made performance expansion chamber, i'd be backing up any claims with at least a dyno print.
cheers,

Hi,
before i stumbled on the jolly-moto, i was going for this, after recommendation from Alains https://www.ebay.de/itm/AUSPUFF-ANLAGE-GIANNELLI-KEVLAR-HONDA-NSR-125-R-BJ-92-01-/171650989943?pt=DE_Motorradteile&hash=item27f7323f77&clk_rvr_id=799754172640&rmvSB=true
the point is, the steel used in all these performance exhausts is VERY thin (hence them weighing just over 1kg) & they do need looking after, both s/s & mild steel.
the mild steel rusts quick & both can be pierced very easily, & im not sure how easily/cheaply they could be welded.
just get the best you can afford & remember most of the expansion chamber is hidden under the fairings.
even though i wasnt keen on trying the portugese exhausts, after doing some research & after speaking to the maker, i was seriously contemplating buying one(just the spanny, i was going to buy a sperate kevlar or carbon can) but then the jm became available.
its your money.....
cheers,

I have seen that also. I can the Giannelli Carbon/Kevlar System both silencer and expansion chamber with postage for £165. Which isn't bad to replace the full system for something shiny and better performance. However I'm not keen on the 'spout' on the end of the can. But they all seem to be like this on 2 Strokes *facepalm*.
Also it is only mild steel which I've heard rust easily and I feel that would be a waste of money. I don't fancy treating it constantly either...
The Portugal guy seems like a good option but it's very 'un-official' and it's not going to come with any warranty or fittings e.c.t. which steers me away.
I honestly don't know what to do.
Rather reasonably priced Giannelli Full system which will potentially rust over the next two years and I'm not sure if I like the look of the silencer but it's growing on me.

Ignore the display image, this is the actual product.

In saying all this, I don't think I have many options as the exhaust systems are very rare in 2015 for the 2001 NSR.
Let me know any further thoughts,
Thanks |

hi,
£165 is bloody good for a 2t performance exhaust tbf.
jolly moto is something silly like 350 quid new & remember even giannelli dont guarantee against defects etc.
up until recently, i would have said that kind of money (up to £350) cant be justified on a road going 125 but... comparing the jolly moto to the original honda system & you see why they cost so much. they are hand welded & imho are a work of art (& weigh 10% of the original exhaust)
so,again, get the best you can afford.
as for stainless v mild steel, i guess thats up to you. like you say, it needs painting or coating to make it through a uk winter.
but, is the bike going to be used all year round? if its only gonna be a w/end toy then mild steel would be fine.
given the choice i'd go for s/s IF there wasnt too much of a price difference.
as an example, i'll need to post a couple of pics of my jm before & after.
when i got it, it had a very fine layer of surface rust which came off easily with a cloth.
but underneath the rust was a thick layer of carbon, especially up at the "neck" (the point nearest the cylinder) it took me f*ckin ages to get it back to bare metal & once polished, it looks amazing (imo obviously) but whos gonna see it?
even so, getting a mild steel performance exhaust & then painting the expansion chamber with VHT black paint would just be silly, imho.
thats why i posted recently looking for recomendations for a clear VHT paint/lacquer.
i dont plan on painting it very often, so we will soon see if the stuff i bought is any good
the"little spout" on the end can, you refer to, is on 99% of 2t exhausts, its the norm im afraid, although some makers are now ditching this traditional "spout" thing. its a matter of taste, see arrow for example.
https://www.motorcycle-exhausts.co.uk/admin/images/115-REFLEX-1.jpg
if i were in your position & really didnt like this spout thing, i'd be buying the best expansion chamber i could afford & then marrying it up to a end can i like the look of most.(without the wee spout)
remember the end can does next to nothing performance wise, so get the most cosmetically suitable end can & bolt it onto the "best" expansion chamber..
good luck in whatever exhaust you settle on,
cheers,
