I think you have something like 10 days for the retest. Partial retest fee is up to the place you get it from, some are free, some are half, and some charge you full wack again (although this one is rare). ____________________ Previously owned: Kawasaki KH125, Suzuki GP125, Suzuki GX 125, Honda CB125 TDC '83, Honda ntv 600, Kawasaki ER5, Kawasaki ZZR600, Aprilia RSV 1000 Mille

hi,
afaik, the 10 day rule only applies to cars, not motorcycles.
& free re-test depends on what it actually failed on. some things are exempt from this 10 day rule.
im 99% sure on that,
cheers,
GAZ |
I'm 100% certain it applies to bikes too.
The system is, if you leave it at the test centre (ie, they do any work) and it's retested before the end of the next working day, only a partial test is required and there's no fee.
If you take it away to do the work and bring it back before the end of the next working day, again it's only a partial retest (except if it failed on wheels or tyres) and there's no fee.
If you take it away and bring it back, after the next working day but before the end of ten working days, it's a partial retest and the tester may choose to charge a fee.
The partial test fee can be whatever the tester chooses, there is no prescribed amount, up to the maximum allowable fee for that class, so beware the test centre that gives an upfront discount on the original test, but then charges the same again for a partial - they gotta get their money back somehow ____________________ Things get better with age; I'm close to being magnificent........

hi,
thanks guys, you've cleared up any confusion. (especially shaft & keith)
no, its not jim allan.
we only have 1 mot tester "local" & he can be a c*nt. always has been.
& yes, he did fail it on.... yes loose drive chain.
glad i came with him & adjusted it outside (now too tight imho) while the c*nt grumbled about being too busy, amatuer mechanics, death traps etc etc.
tbh, i think he would have charged us for something, like a new chain or similar, if he didnt see me giving him the evil eye, whilst holding a wee tool set & a lap top.
made ma day, lol but im sure the git will get me back.
cheers,
GAZ
edit : hold on hold on!!! loking at what Kickstart has posted, if it isnt returned by close of business NEXT day, a full test is done,
so no 10 days then?
or am i being thick? (though tbf, im busy stuffing a kfc down ma throat while trying not to get grease on my keys & watching judge rinder at the same time ) |

If you genuinely thing he's either on the fiddle or just too keen you could just report him?
Personally I'd just go elsewhere. |

A full retest is only carried out if your vehicle fails on something that isn't specifically mentioned on the fees and appeals poster, which you can see here https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/205248/mot-test-fees-and-appeals-poster-vtpa.pdf
Oddly, the chain is one of those things that isn't mentioned. ____________________ Things get better with age; I'm close to being magnificent........

I just MOT'd my Thundercat a few weeks ago. Failed the first time on two points - throttle cable and rear shock. Took it back nearly 2 weeks later expecting to pay again, but got a free re-test. The tester said it was 10 WORKING days for a free re-test so even though it was 12 days on, the two weekends didn't count. He also said that it was the computer that decided not him, he said "I'll put it in the system and if it comes back free, it's free". ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'

hi,
well it seems mot testers can do pretty much what they like then.
if you cant see whats on the poster, then he can say whatever.
1 day, next working day, 10 days or 10 working days, ffs they are worse than the gov dept i work in!
personally think the guy would prefer you to pay him or his mate (at another garage, but hes not a mot station) 40 or 50 quid for a "pre-mot"
basically go over everything ( which i have done already) then he finds something that he will "need" to do (probably not needed) for 1hr labour & parts.
so its over a ton to get it ready (even though im convinced its already ready) for mot.
money which he pockets, where the mot test he probably makes next to nothing on.
bloody cartel!
never have these problems with cars. if it fails. i get a polish mate to fix it. i take it back within a day or 2 & i get the mot cert within 20mins.
should be the same for bikes.
far too much confusion & too much power given to wee pr*cks who just want to milk "noobs" for as much cash as possible.
I have this to look forward to again next month, as 1 of my bikes is due end of april (iirc)
i really need to find a small, friendly mot capable bike garage within 10-15miles of where i live. & be organised enough to book the test a couple of weeks in advance.
i'll try alloa area or just go up to perth. easier for me to go north than west towards glasgow or east towards edinburgh.
falkirks always an option for me, but wasnt for my mate. he on L-plates so its 30mins+ to jim allan. if he needed to come back to mine to sort anything we would struggle to get back before end of day (5pm) which is what my mate was convinced the rules were.
cheers,
