Got some new running shoes today that contain this - first Ive heard of it. Seems like it might be good for bike armour/helmets.

Essentially it behaves like custard. On impact, it locks into a hard shape, but normally is flexible.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D3o
"In 2009, the UK Ministry of Defence awarded D30 Lab £100,000 to fit helmets in order to reduce the kinetic energy of a bullet or shrapnel on impact, because of its moldable properties."

Does not seem to be mentioned on BCF, done a search.

Is it any good?

(there are cheaper ones)

It might also be good as bike crash protection?

I do recall someone making a very expensive set of textiles lined with that stuff.

As to its efficacy, pass.

I think it is in furygan kit. It passes CE tests, so it probably works.

I have some d3o hip pads in my textile trousers, they weigh next to nothing and are soft and flexible and I barely know they are there. If I hit them with something hard, my knuckles for example, they feel and sound like hard plastic.

Was looking for some level two elbow, knee and shoulder pads but got a set of forcefield instead. Will likely replace the armour in my HG jacket with d3o if I find some suitable.

Full scientific test of D3O armour.

Sorta wish I'd had it for the knee armour in my crash recently, as I'm currently trying to heal up a jagged laceration where the Knox armour's hard shell dug well down into my flesh. The test above is a bit silly, as you'd generally only take one or two big knocks to one area. I do have it in my Furygan jacket as well, and in my bike jeans, where I barely notice it.

D3O has non-newtonian properties that are pretty good against high impact, but it would need to be incorporated with something else to give effective protection against injury caused by friction and sliding.

Their conclusion was that a a cheese and red cabbage sandwich is better than the non CE foam inserts fitted in some gear, not that it would pass EN-1621-1 (let alone EN-1621-2) but let's not let pedantry (or facts) get in the way of a good headline.

There a fer manufacturers shipping their kit with D30 now, Klim, Furygan and Hood to name a few. Its a bit like SAS-TEC armour, but alot thicker.

There was a report in the March/April ABR magazine about some dude (Dr John Lloyd) waffling on about how helmets are rubbish and inadequate. So hes inventing a helmet with a non-newtonian material in it to prevent brain damaged. Which to me sounds alot like D30 armour...

Chunks of foam wont stop broken bones. For what it's worth, I've crashed twice in gear that was fully CE armoured and still cabbaged myself. Wouldn't bother upgrading existing armour at a cost of £££, however I did swap the Knox back protector out of my old jacket into my new one as it had a very thin piece of foam.

Anyhow,

This stuff is a lot more comfortable than the D30. Would rather have the Quattrotempi, Held are using it in a lot of products at the moment.

Question

The sandwich was still holding up well at 50J

the CE test requires 50J

The sandwich let through 7.5kn of energy, below the 35kn to pass CE.

Still not enough to convince me to change my armour for a sandwich though. Wink

I have it on the palm of my gloves. Fingers crossed I don't get to test it.

I have these in my jacket and trousers (both Held 4t series, goretex proshell etc). You should take care that they are placed in such a way that they don't flex when you move your joints. The ones I had on my elbows were a little bit too far up the arm, and the armour broke into two pieces from the flexing after about 18 months.

The jacket is a fairly good fit in terms of shoulders, waist and arm length, but the elbow armour pockets aren't quite in the right place for me. On my second set of replacements I sliced about 3cm from the ends of the armour off, so the "cup" of the armour fits on my elbow when it's stuck into the pocket.

I've got d30 armour in my Richa jacket, haven't tested the crash properties but don't plan to either.

All i can say is that its a lot comfier than my old Knox back protector.
