So I'm fed up of always having to charge my helmet camera, so I'm planning to fit a relay to the bikes battery and then have power for a Sat Nav going up to near the clocks, and then have another power cable onto the relay, for the camera.

I don't want it up at the clocks, because it'll end up swaying around scratching the paint on the tank. Likewise I don't want to step off the bike forgetting it's there and accidentally pulling the camera off my helmet. I do need it to be somewhat weatherproof as well, but I think that can be sorted quite easily.

Has anyone done this? If so, where did you route the cable to?

Had the charger under the seat.

When off the bike I simply put the camera on charge, figured it wasnt going to suck that much power. Worked great, when I got back to the bike I swapped my phone over and put that on charge whilst I used the camera. Thumbs Up

The problem is that on 720p the camera only lasts about 3 hours - on 1080p it will barely manage over 2 hours. As it's on the GS, I plan to do longer rides and my commute to work and back takes about 2 hours, so if I forget to charge it fully the night before, I'm screwed.

Huh. I'd assumed that someone would be selling a universal magnetically coupled USB cable, but no luck. They're all device specific (Sony Xperia, Pebble watches). Seems like a gap in the market.

Rather than magnetically coupled, I just realised, I could use a coiled one like this. Which I could attach near the right hand switchgear. Alternatively I could put it under the seat, that would cover the weatherproofing and allow me to pull it out when I need it.

You can get two pole magnetic couplings off of eBay. Use to make connections between +5v and GND connections of your USB. Try cutting up a USB A extension cable?

Edit: called MagCode, is expensive though.

I'll be looking into a front mounted camera soon, can it be powered from the bike in such a way that it only works when the key is in? So it's not sapping the battery when it's off, although presumably it's not gonna be using a lot of power either way.

Yeah, you fit a relay between the usb cable and the battery, and connect the relay to something that only comes on when the ignition is switched on, like a numberplate light.

I got a relay and a 3-cigarette lighter multi socket thing with 2 usbs on it for a fiver today, so I'll put those in and test later, then all that's left is the USB cable for the camera. I'll cover the adapter in silicone sealant as well, to weatherproof it.
