Nope. Do it with the reference on the new keeper supplement. There's no eventual overlap, since your VED will run from the 1st of the current month but the old keeper only gets a refund from the 1st of next month.
SOURCE: did it last night with a car, online with the new keeper doc reference, no hassle.

Well, strictly speaking. In practice it'll still show as taxed until the change of keeper reaches the DVLA, or they SORN it.
However, clued up owners will cancel their insurance as soon as the vehicle is sold. And to avoid hassles with continuous insurance laws, they'll then immediately SORN it as well. The SORN will be cancelled by the new keeper buying VED.
Granted, clued up owners will be few and far between, but you might as well buy VED straight away. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Really clued up owners will suspend their insurance and then apply it to their next vehicle, so that they don't compromise their NCD or fall foul of MIB insurance rules should the vehicle they sold be involved in an uninsured loss event. ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'

Cancel, suspend, transfer, either way if you get to the end of the road with the previous keeper's policy still in place, they're a mug.
Sadly, AskMID still shows my old vehicle as insured (policy transferred off it yesterday) and https://www.gov.uk/get-vehicle-information-from-dvla shows the previous VED expiry date on my new one, even though I VEDed it immediately.
Probably waiting on the wee man who knows how to work the punch-card machine on Monday. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Better in our pockets than those tunnel gnomes in Swansea.
Bear in mind that bought VED runs from the 1st of the instant month, but sold VED is only refunded from the 1st of next month. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.
