This was the bike I saw and I love the look, but he started with a £370 ER-5 (which is good) but then fitted GPZ500 suspension, top end etc to get to 60bhp.
I just wondered what other suitable donor bikes might exist. Cafe racers were a British phenomenon, which rules out V-twins really. Anything old enough to genuinely be period is also a bit poor in the really world and anything truly modern has a single rear damper and the frames all wrong.
So I guess the question really is what's the best donor for the right looks, on a sensible budget and ideally a relatively decent bike to begin with. (On paper a hornet would fit the bill for power, useability, spares etc, just a shame they're a touch too modern.

Some of the most iconic British motorcycles were V-twins. Brough superior and Vincent Black shadow to name two.
They still make bonnevilles. They ride well. The thruxton is pretty much a factory cafe-racered bonneville.
Kawasaki made a bike called a W650 which is halfway there anyway.
If you wnt a modern bike that is a reasonable budget and converts well ito a modern take on a cafe-racer, you could do worse than a TRX850. You can even buy kits. It's not twinshock though.
An SRX600 looks well. Again, doesn't need much work. Has the handling if not the top speed. Big, air cooled singles would be what many of the best old-style cafe racers were based on anyway (manx nortons, rocket goldstars etc).
The japs even made an off-the-shelf cafe racer back in the 80's. A GB500. Which makes honda the ultimate hipsters. They were building Japanese cafe racers before it was cool.

I did the 2010 Round Britain Rally on my 350 Bullet. 89 landmarks, 3 months, 9,500 miles. |
