 |
|
My 1996 Suzuki GSX 750F, the N/S mirror glass ejected itself from the housing and smashed onto the ground the housing is in perfect condition but I am struggling to find people that supply mirror glass.
Sure I can buy another mirror but it seems overkill just to replace the glass. Halfords sell car mirror glass, thinking I could buy a larger one and make a template and cut to suit with a sharp knife. Is this possible or will I just end up breaking the glass while cutting it?
Thanks |

You want to cut a glass mirror with a knife?
Please film it. ____________________ Currently enjoying products from Ford, Mazda and Yamaha

I don't think filming it will help. The knife will cut the film, but not the glass. ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'

Glass is a bitch to cut in anything but straight lines without specialist gear. I'm a tiler (amongst other things)
and find cutting glass tiles a pain in the butt, and that's with a wet tile cutter with a diamond blade.
50/50 success rate, and that's with a LOT of practice. Just buy new mirrors, I just had a look and they
are so much cheaper than I was expecting them to be. For instance, a new door mirror glass for my car
is over £200 from the main dealer , just the glass, nothing else. Oh and glass shops are usually a bit
overpriced I've found. even if you could find someone to do it, I doubt you'd save much cash. ____________________ Currently enjoying products from Ford, Mazda and Yamaha

Worth a try I suppose, I use a boggo SHAW glass cutter when I do use one, although I've heard oil filled cutters
are easier for beginners to get to grips with. ____________________ Currently enjoying products from Ford, Mazda and Yamaha

I cut a mirror glass for a GSXR250/400 once because I couldn't find one. It was a real trial and took several attempts before I got one fitted without breaking it. That was only achieved by cutting it small and fitting it with RTV. It's only a small lip that holds them in but I found they would either not fit/break when fitting or rattle once fitted (hence the RTV). I also found it looked odd compared to the opposite mirror, possibly because of the flat glass I used. I wouldn't attempt it again. ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'

I would probably use acrylic mirror sheet.

However it will not be rigidly flat like glass, distortions could affect perception of distance. |

I tried some of that stuff when it first came out....it was pretty rubbish TBH. I like a nice crystal clear reflection when using my mirrors.
Good job OP
I'm a little sus about the fact none of the offcuts seem to match the mirror but if you're lying, it's only to yourself.......and us of course. ____________________ Space Is Deep |
