(Admin please move to show & tell if possible)

Purchased this yesterday to build up and use on the practical sports bike classic track day in july and just wondered if anyone could point me in the right direction for wiring up the points system as ive only really got experience with CDI stuff.
The bike is a 1982 RD125 with lots of custom bits as you can see, also a rd200 top end fitted.

The bike:

The points wiring currently:

Ive got the wiring diagram and i can see where the coils are going to be wired but i'm slightly confused with the thick green wire along with the thinner one.

The thick green wire goes to a voltage regulator/rectifier which is situated on the frame back of the tank were it meets the seat. can email you some pics if you want to show you were it goes. I like the bike

thanks any photos would be much appreciated.

The reg/rec and all original wiring is in a box right now, and with the mono shock being mounted up behind the tank im guessing its going to be a little different routing wise.

Im currently attempting to follow this diagram:
https://i1233.photobucket.com/albums/ff399/calle_o/AS3RD1251973wiringdiagram.jpg

From what i've figured out:
Orange and grey wires trigger the coils.
White is from the alternator

Unsure of the thin dark green wire just above the thick green one and the black wire below the white one on my photo above.

suddenly it all makes sense!

My points/alternator etc are from a RD200 too along with the top end..

Those crimped terminals are shit.

In simplest terms, it's live feed to a coil terminal, other coil terminal to the moving point, fixed point to earth.

make an adaptor from odds and ends, an old spark plug body and bush, post with slider so dti can be amounted and "set" , rod thru bush but stamp end so rod don't drop down inside engine!!!!!

set dwell on gauge ( so both dwell's ( more accurate than feelers and set the same amount ) then set ign at full advance by advancing centrifugal advance and locking the unit, use test lamp and /or radio "crack", then unlock and run engine.

if set at full advance then you know it aint gunna advance any more............

be carefull as 250 etc can be piston eaters.......start with a cold plug and work up...b8hs from memory was ok for fast road work.

electronic ign if you can afford.......fit and forget else points/setup etc every race weekend.

thanks a lot of all the advice so far.

Not going to the anglesey one no but cadwell yes, are you bikenut?

Got it running today just on a total loss system for now. Might keep it that way but not sure how fast it will eat a battery during track time?

The points gaps were both at around 1mm.... Shocked
Set it right back down to 0.30mm and it seems to run well.

Next week im going to work on getting the timing spot on, so will follow your advice regarding it.

That's interesting regarding the fact its just an RD200 engine, i was told by the seller it had been swapped and he seemed to know his stuff about RD's but maybe he's got it wrong.

The CDI ignition is allowed for what i'm doing and sounds very tempting and i'm going to look into that.

As you have probably guessed the bike is an unfinished project as i bought it, so getting it running and hearing the engine is solid has took a lot of weight off my shoulders!!

Will post any photos of progress as i do it. Thinking TZ250 fairings and some proper rearsets so far cosmetics wise.

one thing that is also completely throwing me is the front end.

If you look the calliper mount is on the wrong side. Im needing a brake calliper and no one is sure what the forks are from. I thought possibly the forks are on back to front.

Can anyone else tell from the photo compared to your own RD?

some of the 125/200 calipers were fitted to the front /back of the forks.so as you say if rd forks there fitted the wrong way round. whats the wheels of did they say.can you put a closer pic of the forks around by were the caliper fits.

Gearbox is fine just the chain was old so its removed at the moment in preparation for a new one.

Pipes are not too good at all, going to be replaced eventually as they are very dented. Anyone know what pipes they actually are/were? lol

The frame is from a RD125 1982 as i have the logbook for it. The swinging arm and shock etc have been fabricated.
Front wheel is also unknown, 17inch and wider than the rear Shocked so definetly not RD i believe. If the forks turn out to be RD ones i will be replacing the wheel for the correct type.

The forks do look very Yamaha if you look at the bleed screw position compared to other RD's especially.

The mystery forks search continues! Thinking Thinking

Kawasaki!!

Little bit of google researching and i believe they are KZ200 forks.

The front wheel is labelled: Motoroma smx125 Rolling Eyes

Think i will be binning that wheel.

Looks like a full front end transplant is going to have to happen!

UPDATE:

Have now ditched the whole kawasaki/chinese front end and fitted a spare CB250RS set of very rough looking (for now) forks, brake caliper and wheel.

If i can get the brake anything like the one on my CB it should be ample for the little RD.
