i am in need of replacing my fork stanchions because they are pitted and have started leaking oil slightly but the ones for my bike a re hard to get so could i just get some from another bike with 37mm stanchions?

No, if the stanchions are in a poor state clean then up a little with some relatively smooth 'Wet & Dry' paper to shift any rust, put some new seals in, refill with fresh oil, and then fit some rubber gaiters and the MOT man won't have a clue and neither will anyone else. The cheapest way out unless you come across another pair of 'legs' in good order and cheap.

Ed is right, but post photos of the stanchions here, and we can give you an idea of just how bad.

If you do rub the stanchions down, you're going to want to get some grit in the range of maybe 1000-3000.
use the coarsest first then work up to finer, change the sheets often as it builds up rust particles which make the paper coarser.

Cant say i have a problem looking for 37mm stanchions for my GPz. Plenty 2nd hand and new on wemoto but almost £100 each Shocked

That's quite bad pitting. It looks like the chrome is thin and cheap, so a second hand replacement set is likely to go the same way. I'm not sure how much of the pitting is on the swept face and how much is above it, but it does look like they're well past bodging.

Rechroming costs about the same as a pair of new budget stanchions, but gives you proper chrome that will last far longer. It depends on how long you plan on keeping the bike.

Those forks are past a cheap fix.

oh dear, was afraid that might be the case, i did have it on the back of a truck a while ago where then strapped the handlebars down so compressing the forks possibly further than they normally go, could this have contributed to it ?
