Just wondering what views are on the bigger capacity bikes. Especially comfort vs handling. ZZR looks more comfy than the other two, I suspect the Blackbird probably handles the best, and the Busa would have the jump on power and wind protection (but maybe tougher on the wrists??) |
If you had an ZZR250, then you had no ZZR at all. A paraler twin is just not the same as an in-line four.
High displacement vs. handling - well, the ZZR1100 is 256 kg / 564.3 lbs (wet) + 1495 mm / 58.86 in wheelbase; the GSXR1300 is 266 kg / 586 lbs (wet) + 1480 mm / 58.3 in wheelbase and the Blackbird is 254 kg / 559 lbs (wet) + 1490 mm / 58.6 in wheelbase.
Now, the engine power output is not that significant compared to the displacement, nor the overall performance and weight. On the other hand a rather sporty ZX12R is only 245 kg / 540 lbs (wet) + it's got shorter wheelbase (1450 mm / 57.1 in), meaning it's gonna be quicker and easier to maneuver, than those motorcycles above.
All that just from looking at specs on the paper. You want short wheelbase and less weight rather than more power. Acceleration is one thing, but slowing down and cornering is what really matters here. Light and short, that's what makes a motorcycle quick. ____________________ '87 Honda XBR 500, '96 Kawasaki ZX7R P1, '90 Honda CB-1, '88 Kawasaki GPz550, MZ 150 ETZ

I'd take the Hayabusa.
I think it's sexy. I nearly got one instead of the GSXR 1000 because it "was faster". But I couldn't really justify the extra cost, and at least I had some sense when I managed to convince myself that the 1000 was fast enough I still think it's one of the sexiest bikes going with performance to back it up. It always looks better in person than it does in pics. |

Depends.......
What is your budget?
Are you a fair weather rider?
Do you want as clean as possible, or a fixer upper?
If you commute or ride all year round, I would go for the Blackbird
If you are a summer only rider, then either of the others.....I may be biased but the Busa is probably considered a bit more modern, but the looks aren't to everybody's taste. Spares are plentiful for both, and they are both reasonably easy to work on with similar pros and cons. ____________________ Current: 2010 Suzuki GSX1340R Hayabusa, 2013 Yamaha YP250R X-Max Sport - Previous: Triumph Sprint ST1050ABS, Honda XL600V Transalp, Honda NT650V Dullsville (don't ask!), Kawasaki ZX9R E1, Honda NX650 Dominator, Suzuki GSX1300RKZ Hayabusa, Honda CBR1000FM, Kawasaki GPZ500S, etc etc |

That can be a bit of an issue. I am 6'3" tall so less of an issue for me. Bar riser kits are available. The ZZR or CBR may be a better option if you are short of arm or short of body. The wind pressure on your shoulders keeps the weight off your wrists at speed though.......if you can keep the speed up ____________________ Current: 2010 Suzuki GSX1340R Hayabusa, 2013 Yamaha YP250R X-Max Sport - Previous: Triumph Sprint ST1050ABS, Honda XL600V Transalp, Honda NT650V Dullsville (don't ask!), Kawasaki ZX9R E1, Honda NX650 Dominator, Suzuki GSX1300RKZ Hayabusa, Honda CBR1000FM, Kawasaki GPZ500S, etc etc |

The ZZR1100 if you get a good clean one in nice colour's (not old mans Rover/Nissan colour's) then yeah I think they are a great looking sports tourer!
I've only ever had a little go on an Injected Blackbird, and it was very nice, very smooth and silky, so for a std bike that you want to put miles onto, and not have as a project then the Bird would be the best IMO and like the Busa mk1 it's a cult bike now, but for slightly different reasons.
The Busa was batshit fast 191mph, and looks like what it's named after too. Will always be in demand for that reason, but then today I bet 1/2 of all Busa's belong to the Straightliner's crowd, drag racers and top speed hero's. The other 1/2 are probably suffering from late 90's Suzuki furry build and corrosion and being broken for there heart to go into kit car's with silly power to weight ratio's!
The Bird is cult because it's long out of production, and it stopped being made while demand was high and still is! The supposed VFR1200 replacement just didn't do it and so they are wanted by many, prices stay strong for the age, and there's lot of high mileage but clean looked after examples left.
I love big bore Kwak's, I like the rough bag of spanners low rpm sound they have, the airbox howl and the general anti socialness of them. Id like the ZZR for a project, but then anything big and 4cylinder from the brand would interest me.
If your budget is strong though and you want a newer bike, id buy a BMW K1300S over all the above! The looks are better than anything Japanese and current, and the limited edition paintjob, with a full Akrapovic titanium system and power commander would be a brilliant machine in it's class! |

Venture onto the owners forums and you will find that a alarmingly large number have blown their con rods... Not high mileage either.. I know someone personally this has happened too, when we went online to research why we found it was far from a isolated incident ____________________ Yamaha MT-09 - Triple powerrrr |

My previous bike was a zzr1200. There was nothing wrong with it, it was reliable, fast and comfy. We covered a lot of miles together.
However, the Hayabusa is in a different league. ____________________ Current bike - 2018 H2-SX, 2004 SV1000s, 2016 Aprilia RSV4 RF, 2017 Sherco SERF 300, 2003 Suzuki DRZ400 (stolen - AY53 JUU) |

Quality hurts my eyes
So:
Dyno run - Busa wins
Cunning stunts and sidewaysness - Busa wins
Top speed & flat out on French motorway - Busa wins
Not terminally dead before end of trip - Busa wins
Twisties - R1 wins
I declare the Busa the winner by a mile ____________________ stinkwheel: He had an animated .gif of a cat performing fellatio. It's not socially acceptable. It can have real life adverse effects on other people. |

The R1 should be the best of them, it's light and it's got some degree of race pedigree in it. The other 3 are ''Hypertourers'', not made to be quick.
The R1 should be around 175.0 kg dry, the hypertourers are above 250 kg. 75 kg difference is a lot. I can see the difference between my fat ZXR and my mate's featherlight 919 Fireblade. The moment you have to use the brakes is when you feel the extra weight the most. ____________________ '87 Honda XBR 500, '96 Kawasaki ZX7R P1, '90 Honda CB-1, '88 Kawasaki GPz550, MZ 150 ETZ
