....because YOU ARE.

say a couple of american clips on this idea, part of a safety initiative there.

it is advice you hear people give but it takes a bit of getting your head round to put into practice don't you think? Sounds sensible so i'll give it a go.

All the time?

From experience, it gets a bit awkward if you wander into the women's loos pretending to be invisible.

haha, now that's really getting into the part Smile

not sure that i can totally get into the mindset though but i do watch the wheels of cars at junctions where they could turn in front, i find this is the best early warning of their intentions.

both me and our boy have had people turning across our paths causing accidents in the past and both said they just didn't see us, both relatively low speed urban situations. In my case the guy was done by the law for driving without due care and attention.

Not sure if I'm lucky or just doing something right (I'm inclined to think the latter) but I don't remember a single incident where a person has pulled across the front of me from a junction in 9 years of riding.

I don't wear Hi-Vis or anything like that either, and the majority of my riding is in London or it's suburbs.

I'm not suggesting it doesn't happen, but if it happens to somebody so often that they need to actively change their riding mindset I'd expect there are other factors at play and that darwinism will ensure that soon enough they'll stop experiencing issues while riding altogether.

Watch me get splatted next time I'm out on the bike now Laughing

i think making yourself SEEN is the key to riding safely.

i do everything i can to make sure everyone knows i am there, whether this is correct road positioning or an nice loud exhaust, i think its kept me safe all these years.

On the way to work this morning, going down the dual carriageway in the second lane, traffic moving around 50mph in both lanes.

I was next to a car pretty much at the drivers window (and for those that have seen my bike will vouch it isn't quiet), it decided to drift into my lane, needless to say she got a nice size 10 dent in the door, literally scared me shitless as I had no where to go.

So yeah, must be invisible.

It's the second in a series of weekly observations. I'm looking forward to "Target fixation - look where you want to go" and "Oiling the chain - dangers of centre stands".

Collect the set.

It's all luck. I went 2 years without that, then had it happen twice in a couple of weeks. Luckily both times I avoided a collision

Keep helmet on, borrow Hellkat's cherry red maybellene lipstick. Just, for crying out loud, do remember to sit down to pee or the games instantly up.

I do not think it means what you think it means.

Back (sort of) on topic, my wife recently badgered me into going hi-vis. Here's how her strange logic played out:

Wife: "I'd be happier if you wore hi-vis"
Me: "But I have been riding this long [14 years] without any issues"
Wife: "Yes, and I'd like to keep it that way"
Me: "So why would I change anything?!"
Wife: "I'd be happier if you wore hi-vis"

To avoid the very real possibility of a fatal logic error or infinite feedback loop, I now have some hi-vis. So far, so good, mind you.

Part of it is that we have so few bikers in the UK compared to other parts of the world, that the car drivers don't
look out for us because we're so uncommon. I'm in France at the moment and its getting on for 50/50
here, I'm driving here and they certainly keep you on your toes, so many scooters and mopeds and often
ridden quite gung ho. Last year I visited Malaysia and it was the same there, with as many as 5 on-board too.
Our limo driver who drove us to our resort said that on average in Malaysia there are 14 biker deaths a day Shocked
It's just a complete free for all over there though, here in France there seems to be more regulation and funnily
enough one of the very first things I saw after we picked up our car at Nice airport was a big training pad like
we have at home, Sat in the traffic I got a chance to watch someone do the slalom and it seemed quite fast
compared to ours but the cones were spaced wider and not in a straight line. Lots of bikes on the pad though.
