Hi all,

I am currently riding an XR125L, but have a full license.
I want to get a second hand Hornet but am worried that I am not able to handle the weight of it. I weigh 8 1/2 stone so there not much of me, plus I'm a bit of a short arse.

Does anyone think I would have trouble handling it through the traffic filtering in and out??
Like I say I had an XR so that would be really light in comparison.

Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks
Looney Tune

Well IIRC the hornet is 170KG, so not that heavy at all.

At 17, I owned an ER-5 which is slightly heavier and I managed OK and I only weighed 8-ish stone, its only when you drop the bike does it become a problem

Hi

Weight is only a problem when you do not get the balance right, and at that moment however strong you are and however much the bike weighs you have a major problem.

The main point is to be able to balance it correctly, as after that you will be fine.

All the best

Keith

Hi,

I'm about your weight and am only 5'5" (give or take 1cm) and have no problem with the weight and size of my Hornet 600. Both feet firmly on the ground, lol.

You'll have no problem filtering etc. unless you're really bad at handling a bike and have no confidence.

are you all little light bastard or something?
and weight shouldnt be a proble, if you can get your feet on the floor, and the balance right, youll be fine, when moving, you wont notice the weight much.

Agree with the above, balance is the key, those extra kilo's are not the problem, it's the extra power you'll have to be more careful with!

I'm 6'2 and a rake, i weigh around 10stone. I have no problems with the weight, it was one fo the reasons i went for the hornet its quoted wight is lower than the bandit and it seams to hold the weight much lower thatn the bandit, making it a lot easer to ballance.
I can get both feet flat on the floor with my legs bent quite a lot, but i do have silly long thin legs.

I'm definitly that. I've always wanted a Hornet since they came out and now may seem my chance. It's a 98 with 15000 on the clock very clean and £2399.

That seem good to you all?? I don't have a clue with second hand prices. This is from a dealer so I could knock em down a bit.

Thanks for all your comments.

Hi

I'm 5ft 7'ish and have no problems with my Hornet. Both feet can firmly touch the floor and balance is not a problem (even with my 12St plus bulk!).

The Hornet is a very light bike (I found it felt much better balanced than the CB500 I did my DAS on) and seems to have a low centre of gravity. You won't have a problem believe me! The only thing I would say is do watch out for the small front wheel, it does make the bike drop in to corners pretty damn quick, but this is part of the fun! You soon get used to it.

In terms of price, look at mine........
https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=27689&highlight=
https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=29138&highlight=

I paid £2300 for it last April (private sale). It's a 1998 'S reg' and came with Micron can, flyscreen, crash bobbins and mini indicators (all the original parts too). I think it had something like 11,000 on the clock. The price you're quoting seems high to me.

Hope this helps!

It was coming from a dealer I used to work at, so hopefully I might be able to get it down to about that. If I can't then I won't get it and just wait till the right one comes up.

Your Hornet looks immaculate.

I so wanna Hornet now.

My 03 reg hornet cost 4k last march, had 2.5k on the clocks. I got a free restriction service and new set of tyres (as the old front had some damage to the wall) The bike was in mint condition.
A hugger is a must on a hornet, as are R&G crash protectors IMO. I've got both, and a fly screen, dont know how much difference it makes as i havnt ridden without one.

Isn't the XL taller than a hornet? I think you'll find the hornet an absolute breeze to handle. Put it in first gear and glide through the traffic! Thumbs Up

Mines an XR125, specially made for short arses. Hornet maybe shorter, I'll have to have a look on the Honda site at the specs.
I'm more worried about being caught of balane really trying to maneuvre it.
I never had any trouble when I worked in the bike shop, although they weren't my bikes I took in and out.

Hopw about this, never dropped a big bike, but one morning I was putting out a C90 and it was raining I had one hand on the handle bar and that was it, normally I could push it on to the centre stand no problem. Cos my foot was wet and the stand was too, it slipped off more or less pushing it away from me. What a struggle that was not letting it drop, I was leant right over, and the bikes peg was just touching the floor.
The only time I had frights with the bigger bikes was when the other blokes used to push the back of the bike as I'm wheeling it backwards putting me off balance.

Is the servicing every 5000, I can't remember now.

Any body have a rough idea of a typical service cost?? Just and estimate of course.

Note: I'm doing me research. Don't wanna get it then end up not being able to afford running it.

You can pick up a 2000-2001 model with a lower mileage for that price considering the time of year etc. if you look around. Remember the 98 ones are the oldest Hornets.
