 |

Quite simple,
Won't be riding the bike in the wet and just had a gold coloured RK race chain fitted.
With so many lubes about for chains I find most just leave a tacky finish which just attract the grime so can I apply a chain lube that will do its job but at the same time one that will leave the chain with a shiney finish ? ____________________ MTownley |

I've bought and used a shit load of lubes ...some ones for the bike too.
My bike lives outside though, and I rarely use a cover.
The best compromise I have found is Wurth dry chain lube, has some of the good properties of chain wax (longevity mainly), but also the main benefits of an actual lubricant, looks shiny, but whiteish. ____________________ The above post is most likely nonsensical.

I'm still looking for that perfect chain lube. I've taken to cleaning the chain with WD40 (would use paraffin if I had some to hand), wiping off thoroughly, choosing a lube that goes on nice and thin, applying, then wiping off the excess. Am managing to keep a gold chain looking gold this way. Not that I ride in wet weather much, so I don't have a huge battle with corrosion thankfully. ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017

I cleaned my chain yesterday using Muc Off Chain cleaner and the using the Dry lube that they do.
One quick question though. Do people clean the sprockets with the same stuff. Because I'm not mechanically minded and I wouldn't dare remove them in case I messed it up. Just my sprockets are black and I'm scrubbing the best I can in all the nooks and crannies but just can't get access to it all |

Thanks for some great replies Guys
I think a combination of WD40 to clean off the basic grime and a reapplication of chain lube both with the help of the chain brush seem the way to go ____________________ MTownley |

The usual advice here is not to use WD40 to clean your chain. Can't remember why not. I wouldn't use it myself, but found it ok and was too lazy to go out and get some paraffin, which may be a better idea - certainly will clean it well. I've used Muc Off degreaser, Jizer etc before, and they work well, but cost more. After those, rinse well with cold, clean water, dry with a rag, then apply lube. Don't overdo the lube. Mark the chain, or start from the rivet/split link, and go round once. As I said, with lubes that go on thin, I tend to lightly wipe round again to remove excess. ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017

Fit an oiler. Your chain will last twice as long and won't build up with snot that's harder to remove than dried weetabix. ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'

The last bike I had with a Scottoiler would piss oil everywhere. So I'd adjust it, it'd be alright for a while, then start doing it again. Might as well lube the fecking thing myself, was the conclusion I came to, especially after I noted one time that the oil was getting on the rear tyre.
The new bike has one fitted. I'll see how I get along with it.
I'm happy to stop using WD40 to clean the chain, but does anyone have absolute proof of the problems it can cause, and not just hearsay? Hasn't caused shorter chain life for me thus far, as far as I can tell. Don't seem to be adjusting it more or anything like that. Always nice to have facts though ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017
