PostPosted: 15:00 - 23 May 2015    Post subject: First Ride this year! Reply with quote

Hi guys.

Just come back on from my first ride this year after cleaning and lubing chain yesterday!!

I've been putting of going out because of my thyroid issue and the amount of weight I've put on from it over the winter but my god I enjoyed it. I thought I would be to big (fat).

Couple of things to add:

I've only had my license around a year and I ride a FZS 600, I noticed today I felt way more confident while riding. Felt like I was leaning over alot more in the corners than I normally would but I'm not sure why. Shocked

The other thing is I'm having to wear a pair of jeans because of my weight Sad I bought I pair of motorbike trousers but they the correct waist size but knee protection was more like shin protection. Any ideas on trouser front don't want to spend alot because weight will come off.

Thanks!

So because your knee protection isn't in the right place so you wore jeans? Seriously man wear the gear, even if the armour is in the wrong place it's better than jeans. Or just take it out if it's interfering with your movement.

I not that they're the only thing in the wrong place. They're stupidly long. They drown me and I can't really walk around with them on haha.

If they're stopping you moving about then I get why you'd rather not wear them. Go and buy some cheap cube or tuzo textiles mine were about £30 I think and chuck those on. Beats fucking your legs up if you bin it Thumbs Up

trousers are usually available in different leg lengths

motorcycle trousers with armour removed still better than denim

talk to Hood (kevlar jeans) or Scott (leathers) if you need something unusually proportioned.

Not crashing seems like a much better idea to me.
Cheap textiles are unlikely to be a great fit and well give road rash too, as they move around the leg.

Yes, I'd far rather scrape my bare knee to the bone on tarmac than get a boo-boo from having a layer of textile move around a bit. The ignominy!

Anyway, season will be over soon, problem solved.

weight may be attributable to the thyroid, depending on
the severity of the hypothyroidism."

you got fat because you eat too much and don't move enough. Don't blame your thyroid.

Don't talk about things you don't know. I have graves disease. And have been on carbimizole since october which stops my thyroid from working basically blocking the hormone produced. Since Xmas I've put on near 5 stone without changing my diet Because my metabolism has stopped dead.

I had my radio iodine treatment a few weeks ago and am currently radioactive just waiting on the all clear to come off meds.

Sounds like you eat too much for the amount you move.
If your situation changes (be it physiological or activity related), you'll need to change calorie consumption to match.

Hope you enjoyed the ride and get your kit sorted.

Once the radioiodine has done it's job your endocrinologist will probably give you some thyroxine to get you euthyroid again.
You'll feel better and have more "zip" then.

Good luck to you Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

Thanks dude. You obviously know a bit about the thyroid and how it works.

People just read things online and think they're doctors Sad

I know for a fact I don't eat like a fatty and I don't sloth like a fatty either lol Twisted Evil

This ^^^
Riding without being protected to the hilt might make you more cautious / safer as a rider altogether. Too many people leap around and get terribly excited when people choose to ride in shorts / jeans / boots with laces.

A few years back this was the norm in this country, its still the norm oodles of places overseas. We just seem to have gone mad on risk. Everything is deemed dangerous. Rolling Eyes

And are you consciously aware of the level of protection that you're wearing when you make a decision to go for it?

An open face lid, maybe. Tight race leathers, could be.

Kevlar lining in your jeans, I very much doubt it.

I'd make any decisions based on "am I going to get knocked off?" rather than "at least I won't get road rash" full race leathers wouldn't make me any more confident than shorts, I'm more than confident in my riding ability however I don't trust any other cunt on the road.
