PostPosted: 11:47 - 26 May 2015    Post subject: z800 for a beginner ? Reply with quote

hi,

I would like to hear some opinions about z800 as I'm thinking of buying one. Still going to do a test ride soon. As it is going to be my first big bike I would like to hear on what should I be looking at when doing a test ride to know if the bike is right for me ? Or is it a bad decision to go with z800 as a beginner ? I heard it's quite easy to handle but the only concern for me is weight (which again I heard is a non issue once you get your feet of the ground). My height is 173cm-5,7", weight 65kg.

Any opinions much appreciated.

Add engine bars and enjoy.

Not for a Z800, sorry. The PUIGs on my GS seem sturdy enough and took a "lay down" without any fuss - and without damaging anything else.

Oh, if you do fit them, be aware that some insurers do want to know, as they can (apparently) turn some broken plastics and a dented tank into a bent frame and a written off bike.

Not that I've told mine because I expect that I actually believe that they were probably fitted when I got it and what am I, some sort of bike nerd? Aren't they standard equipment? Whistle

Probably not a standard. At least for kawasaki Smile My friend bought some cheap one from ebay for his kawasaki er6n. When he fell down with a bike engine bar broke as well and the bike got damaged too and it meant quite a lot of money to repair everything Smile So I guess it makes sense to get a proper engine bar.

One of my DAS instructors owned a new Z800 which he said he likes..... However, his bike had been in the Kwak garage for weeks due to some common issue/ re-call on his bike? I'm not entirely sure of the details with this but may be worth a check out. I'll bet he got some ribbing of his colleagues because of this as he works in main Honda/Triumph dealers!.

I think Z800 look very nice too! personal taste that one.

Also don't do what I did and get something that you don't really want because the world thinks that thing that you really want is too fast and dangerous for you. I have personally realised this to be a little bit of a fallacy really and if you can't control your throttle you shouldn't be on any bike.

'Beginner' big bike haha. Good marketing ploy to sell commuters to noobs that really wanting sports bikes. Yes I am bitter Smile

No VOSA recalls for the Z800 in the UK.

True, but the counter argument might be that if you get a bike where you have to ride it on small throttle openings much of the time then you'll just end up frustrated and tempted to get a bit silly when rare opportunity presents itself.

I am quite serious in opining that my Enfield is a more fun - and therefore better - commuter bike than my BMW. Horsepowers for courses.

Z800 for lulz though, go to it.

That's interesting Roger regarding the recall logging, he certainly has some issues that he had bother getting sorted that he did use the term re-call to me, maybe still worth OP investigating and if needed I could get clarification of exactly was up with his Z800 if OP wanted.

Yes do excuse my earlier rant regarding more powerful beginner bikes. I just felt personally duped, my own fault of course and now have shiny 650F when I really wanted shiny RR. A good old lump of depreciation cost by a mistake by me. I commute to work by chopper, didn't want a comfy, easy to ride, smooth sport tour commuter bike. Just wanted a bike for a bit of fun and thrills. I knew it too at the time of purchase, just told myself I was doing the sensible thing.

https://motorbikewriter.com/kawasaki-ninja300z800-motorcycles-recalled/

"Worldwide safety recall", ABS bikes October 2012 to August 2013. Still can't see it listed on the VOSA site, but that might be their derp or mine.

The z750 seat height is about 810mm and that was ideal for me at 5ft 8 and a bit with short legs Smile but the z800 is a smidge higher(834 at a glance) and its heavier I think.
Its easy to do something daft when you can only dab your toe down.Especially if the bike weighs a bit.
Don't let it put you off though if you really like the bike and if you have a garage its easier. But I have to manually move my bike a lot to get it in the back garden and heavy isn't ideal in that situation.
I would really test ride one first because you might find you prefer lighter and lower.
My current bike has a 810mm seat height too but only weighs about 170 and its so much easier than the Kawasaki to move about and feels much lighter cornering, slow turning and when stationary.
I cant see me ever going back to a more weighty bike.
Got to say though the 800 is a fantastic looking bike Smile

Hi, what is your current bike ? Smile Well I saw this lowering kit online for z800. maybe that would help if the bike feels quite high Smile : https://www.lustracing.co.uk/suspension/kawasaki-z800-lowering-kit.html

Got a speed four now but that's probably below your price range.
Its a great bike but they stopped making them in 06 I think and you're probably looking at something newer.
I love the bike but if someone offered me a newer z800 I'd take it Smile

If you can lower it ,even just an inch, then that would probably be a good option.Cos it is a very nice bike.

Is it possible there's a discrepancy between Z800 and Z800e?
