GSXR 600 Srad 1998 electrical fault

Hi all,

Hoping you can help get my bike back on the road. Some background first. Had an alarm on bike that I removed and soldered wires back together, that was 2 months ago. Bike running lovely since then. On my way home approx. 7 days ago, stopped at the junction, bike totally cut out, no electrics, thought it might be a loose connection, checked and nothing. Read some stuff online and most suggestions say rectifier. Took tail off and checked rectifier but all cables look fine, no burnt ones. Removed rectifier and still same problem.

Fully charged the battery, checked the main fuse too. There seems to be a lot of clicking sounds coming from the relay next to the rectifier.

Fully charged battery: 12.24v
Connected to bike but ignition off : 12.22v
Connected to bike ignition on: multi meter starts jumping around like crazy.
Panel lights not on or flickering on and off. Relay G8MS-S23 clicking away.

Have replaced relay but same problem, do not have spare battery to test with and do not know anyone around here with a bike.

All help/advice gratefully received.

Any idea what the relay is for? Maybe a short somewhere connected to that??

If the pump is the type with points, maybe they're shorting out. Have you checked all the auxiliary fuses?

unplug pump, if the multi meter jumps about again then it not that

Thanks for cracking through the packs. I always what to see what’s inside but then thought I don’t have right tools for it. Then at times even I searched Best power tool brand kit for this but didn’t had guts to break it open. Thanks again for showing what’s hiding inside.

Hi All,

Here is an update:

Ordered, charged and installed a new battery this morning before work. Bike fired up and it was great BUT I decided to check if it was charging, stuck a multi meter across the terminals as the bike was running at 3000 revs and there was no charge, it was steady at 11.99v, surely that does not sound right, should it not be around 13v???

Check any fuses, but as it's dead completely though and not charging, chances are the generator is fried.

Ok here goes, if I used the multi meter correctly then I got the following results:

Stator wires: I got approx. 60v from each of the wires.
R/R wires: I got a range from 0.350 to 0.360 and then when I crossed the multi meter probes over I got no reading.

I saw no burnt wires or melted connectors.

Not 100% sure that I am doing it correctly but watched a couple of youtube videos and copied them.
