Anybody got an idea of where to start diagnosing a 2001 ER5 that's turning over at a decent clip but won't fire?

Struggled to get the OH's ER5 fired up last week but after some perseverance it did eventually go. Tried again this morning and it's just a no go. Not even a cough.

I'm thinking it's either a fuelling issue - carbs needing a good clean maybe? Or could it be the starter motor?

New battery and plugs in it so I know they're okay.

I'm pretty new to the DIY mechanic bit so any thoughts much appreciated.

Cheers

Also, whilst I'm here - at what point should you stop turning it over for fear of flooding the engine?

Yes, full choke and about half to two thirds throttle...

Sure the leads are on the plugs properly? And if there is a fuel tap ... are you sure it's not been flicked to reserve / off?

Why?

I know it depends on the bike, but my principle is that if it'll idle without throttle then it should fire up without it as well.

I never opened the throttle when starting my GPZ, for example, and my Enfield will kick back if the merest hint of throttle is applied while starting.

I agree that it shouldn't be necessary but she's a grumbly old girl who requires a loving kick augmented by a touch of voodoo to get her to wake up in the morning (much like me). Does struggle to idle w/o throttle for the first minute or so - even at full choke.

Tap definitely on run. Will give the leads a clean and wiggle after work and look at the carbs over the weekend I guess.

Start at the start.... Have a good go at starting it, then whip out a spark plug, or both. Is it covered in petrol or bone dry.

If its dry you have a fuel problem... wet its probably spark related.

that's a better place to start diagnosing the problem from.

If the starter is turning the engine over (you say it is at "a good clip") there's not a fault with it.
