Posted: 19:10 - 30 May 2015 Post subject: Fake details given by new owner of a car I sold. |
 |
|
So, a dodgy Pikey looking bloke and his 3 chavy sons have popped round and bought an old Shogun for cash and driven it away. He said he was a motor trader, so filled in his details on the yellow part of the V5, which is for scrap or selling to the motor trade. I keep this bit and send off to the DVLA and he keeps the rest of the V5. This is correct according to the back of the slip.
Now before I posted it off, I thought I'd lookup the postcode as it looked a bit odd for the area he put down as his address. Yup, the street exists, but under a completely different postcode. Looking at the size of the close, I doubt there's even 18 houses on there, given he used No18 as his address, I'm also guessing his name was made up too.
So, I send off the slip to the DVLA and they'll register the new owner as this made up name and address. It's looking obvious that something dodgy is going on, but could I still be liable for this vehicle? I can't see what else I could have done, you hardly ask for proof of ID when the new owner turns up and fills in his bit of the form. ____________________ TZR250 2MA road, TZR250 1KT road, TZR250 2MA race, TDR250, YZF-750R Boost colours.

It's SORN and the insurance was transferred to my new van last week. When a pikey and his 3 sons turn up from and Ebay ad, there's not much more I can do to verify his details. I don't think they'd have taken too kindly to me asking for ID.
I've photographed the "sold to motor trader" section with his now confirmed false details, kept a record of his mobile number. Not much else I can do.
I'll send the slip off recorded and wait for the DVLA to get in touch to tell me the new owner details are fake.
I can see why it's sometimes less hassle to scrap low value cars now. ____________________ TZR250 2MA road, TZR250 1KT road, TZR250 2MA race, TDR250, YZF-750R Boost colours.

Same with his name, there's no need to be guessing if it's real or not. |
Confirmed that there's only 16 houses on that close on the Royal Mail website, he put down No 18. The postcode isn't even in the right format, the last three are number, number, letter, where it should be one number followed by 2 letters.
His name is the model who is the face of Tommy Hilfiger, Tommy Dunn. I suspect I'm going to have the DVLA on speed dial soon. ____________________ TZR250 2MA road, TZR250 1KT road, TZR250 2MA race, TDR250, YZF-750R Boost colours.

| Robby wrote: | It isn't your problem. You sold the car, he wrote down some details, you pass on the paperwork. Once DVLA notice that it's a bit dodgy - which will probably once the new V5c is returned undelivered - they might do a bit of looking, and eventually flag the number plate on ANPR as one to stop.
Pikey has 2-3 months use out of the car before the plates need changing. If you want to make things more difficult for him, report it to the police, not the DVLA. |
Now he and his boys knows where I live and have had a good look around, seen at least one of my bikes, a 3 year old VW T5 and my caravan, I don't really want to piss him off.
The caravan is in the back garden, blocked in by both alarmed cars and the T5 has a wheel clamp fitted. The keys will be living upstairs with me overnight for a while. Maybe a bit paranoid, but I don't tend to trust pikeys. I wasn't expecting a whole car load of them when he phoned. ____________________ TZR250 2MA road, TZR250 1KT road, TZR250 2MA race, TDR250, YZF-750R Boost colours.

I had pretty much the same thing with my near-scrap 3 series. Only my "motor traders" were eastern European.
Checked with my wife's uncle who is ex-CID, and he said it's up to the buyer what they put, and 100% no duty on the seller to investigate whether they're telling the truth or not. So don't worry about it. I kept photos of the docs and the (dated/timed) receipts anyway, just in case they got nicked for insurance/sorn on the way home... ____________________ Honda Varadero 125cc => Suzuki Bandit 650 33bhp => 77bhp =>

Was a nightmare whenever i came to insure a vehicle or get a mobile or anything where they had to search for the address, as technically my address didn't exist.
Could be that this is the case in this situation although sounds dodgy its not down to you to prove the details given are correct. |
No, it's definitely fake, the postcode isn't even in the right format with the last 3 digits, the fist 4 digits are also for an area around 15 miles from the street address and village. I'm guessing it's no co-incidence that he has the same name as the male model who's the face of Tommy Hilfiger. ____________________ TZR250 2MA road, TZR250 1KT road, TZR250 2MA race, TDR250, YZF-750R Boost colours.

It's nothing to do with you, and not your responsibility.
You've done your bit, let the DVLA deal with it. |
I'm guessing I'm still going to get a fair bit of hassle convincing the relevant agencies or police that I'm not responsible for any offences committed.
I sent the slip off today recorded delivery. If the new keeper isn't a real person or address, being the last known registered keeper, surely all the fines etc will be sent to me? ____________________ TZR250 2MA road, TZR250 1KT road, TZR250 2MA race, TDR250, YZF-750R Boost colours.

The only questions now are what crime will the Shogun be used in and how long are we going to have to wait until mpd72 gets woken up by police removing his front door?

Took their time. Hopefully that's the last that you hear about it.
