tips on how to get the cylinder on without damaged rings?

fit piston to rod, hold rings tight between thumb and forefinger on the sides of the piston, make sure barrel comes down squarely onto it and your fingers holding the rings are in the cutaways of the liner when you lower the barrel

or, fit piston in barrel with circlip in other side and gudgeon pin sticking out enough to lower over small end of rod, stick a rag all around the conrod, with small end bearing fitted lower it all down until you can get the gudgeon pin through the small end bearing, now all you have to do is fit last circlip and remove the rag

I always put a bit of two stroke oil around the bore then on the piston and the rings hold the rings tight with the thumb forefinger in the groves on the piston then slide the barrell over until you clear the top bottom rings.

Aye...I hold the rings with my fingers as above, a bit fidly but the ring compressors can be even worse on bikes.
Remember to get the circlip positioned properly, (a common mistake that usually results in new piston, rings and rebore required).

Cable tie around the rings to hold them in and cut it off once the Harrell has pushed it off the piston ?
