If you've passed your full test, could you theoretically still use your L plates if you wanted to?
I can't say I haven't toyed with the idea of popping them on and waiting for some VW Golf chav to start revving up at the lights... |

I don't think I'll actually do it, but it's interesting to know. |

Law states that provisional licence holders "MUST" display L-Plates (complying fully with regulations on size, and border), visible from both front and rear of the vehicle.. ie it is a specific 'requirement' of law. states that Full Licence holders "Should Not" display L's.. hence it is merely an advisory comment, its not against the law to do so.
I think its somewhere in the RTA or one of the C&U amendments there's more detailed 'advice' such as Driving-School vehicles, where a driving instructor 'should' remove or cover over 'permanently fixed' L-Plates or other, 'Learner Markings' when the vehicle isn't being driven by a Learner or during the 'normal working day' of the instructor... and when I was instructing, if we were ferrying school bikes with L's on about, further than popping to the petrol station to top'em up, we would tape an X over the plate; as it's 'code of practice'.
I will confess I did rather wanted to fit cut-down L-Plates to one of my 125's; "That L-Plates illegal - Must be umpety mm"... "Err.. but I'm not a learner!"... "then you shouldn't be displaying L-Plates!".. "But officer! You just told me its NOT a 'legal' L-Plate..." and see how they got out of it!
But then, I once got harangued outside ASDA by an (older) fella on a scooter, who insisted that I should fit L-Plates to the 125 'cos "Plods hot on it & WILL do ya! 2-points per missing plate!" he added. Got quite heated when I told him I didn't need them. "But its a ONE-TWO-FIVE.. it HAS to 'ave'em!"... "Err.. no.. LEARNERS have to have'em!"... "Yeah! 125! so it got to have L-Plates!!!".... "but I'm not a learner"... "then wot-choo-doowin on a 125?!?!".... "TRYING to lock the chain round it and do my shopping!" told me I was 'daft' for having a full licence.. he'd been riding for twelve years 'just' repeating his CBT... "Cheaper, innit!"... err... "No"... but you get'em!
Meanwhile, Corsa-kid'll give it revs L-Plate or no, if they are that way inclined... I tend to just let'em get on with it... I even let them 'beat' me off the line from time to time... it makes them feel special.. and in-front, they are easier to keep an eye on, and frequently quite amusing to watch... just have to remember they will almost STOP if there's a road bump ahead.. I like that.. the sound of over-size exhausts grinding on tarmac... Personally I have never seen it, but my (teenage schoolgirl) daughter recounts an incident with one actually loosing their tail pipe on one outside the school, and the embarrassed twerps getting out to retrieve it.. and burning themselves on the hot metal... So, I'm still hopeful of observing such spectacle! ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!

When my dad worked for BSM, he pointed out that their cars only displayed an L plate when it had the magnetic pyramid on the roof. It went in the boot between pupils.

But that's a Corsa, to get two in there plus that sign they'd have to be pretty early primary schoolers.

I've observed that driving school cars with only one person in are almost as bad at driving as mini-cab drivers.Strangley, two groups that used to be better than most
I'm not sure tho that driving school cars with only one person in are always driven by instructors ____________________ Space Is Deep |
