I didn't think I'd manage to stitch myself up with this new vehicle excise duty rules that have been introduced, as I thought I was pretty clued up - but I was wrong!

I've somehow stitched myself up good and proper with a new bike purchase today......

Bought a bike from someone who only had the green slip and the owner previous to him has sent the V5 off. The bike is taxed, but only until our friends at the DVLA process the paper work - that's where I'm stuck! I thought I would just check the DVLA vehicle enquiry on a daily basis, to see when the tax has been refunded to previous owner and then tax the bike myself with the green slip reference number online. Problem is, the green slip I have with my sellers details on will be superceeded by the new V5 that is on the way to the chap I bought the bike from.

How will I tax it!!!??

Am I going to have to wait for my seller to forward to V5 to me so that I can get the bike registered in my name/use the new green slip to tax bike - that being that he sticks to his promise and does actually forward it to me!

Or am I over thinking this!?

Because other than for taxing the bike, it's value is pretty much zero to me!

The whole point of being the registered keeper is majoritily only for taxation purposes - it does not signify who the legal owner is, only who is responsible for the vehicle and thus responsible to pay the VED. This is actually also stated on the V5.

I ran a full HPI check and had a full written reciept from the seller. Checked he was who he said he was, and off I went. Thumbs Up

Yup, V5C is a liability, not an asset.

Tax it on the new keeper slip that you have. When the keeper changes to you, the refund will go to the chap you bought it from. Hop in your time machine, go back to when you bought it and negotiate a further discount for that amount.

The Firestorm is nippy, but not nippy enough for time travel!

If I don't hear anything further from the seller, I am going to end up having to apply for a V5 directly from the DVLA. I could potentially be off the road for a while?!

I would be far more worried as to why someone is selling a bike they have only just bought...
Did he say how long ago he bought it.
New owner sends slip off V5 comes back in a coupe of weeks MAX....

Are you suggesting that maybe I shouldn't?!

He had owned it for around 3 weeks. Said he didn't get on with a v-twin and wanted to go back to an IL4. The bike is mechanically sound so his reasons don't worry me. For all I know he may just have needed the cash!?

I've checked the DVLA vehicle enquiry system today which is still showing the most recent V5 as being issued in 2013 so it doesn't look like they have processed anything as yet!

What's the downside to the chap you bought it from if you tell the DVLA now?

V5C aside, the chap you bought it from can and should write to the DVLA immediately to tell them about the change of keeper. If he does, he's done everything necessary.

If he chooses not to, or dicks around when he gets his copy of the V5C in, then that's his problem if they do him for failure to notify.

Not having a new (new) keeper slip with which you can buy VED for yourself, that's your problem.

You could try contacting the DVLA to make it their problem. Should be a laugh if nothing else.

The downside to contacting them before hand is that there is a £25 fee for a V5 if the new keeper slip isn't provided.

What size of bike are we talking here? Would you rather have it sitting around doing nothing, or eat the cost of buying VED on the old-new keeper's slip in the knowledge that the refund will go to him?

Bike is not registered to me as yet and is taxed.

Could that have something to do with the person you bought the bike off. NOT sending in the new keepers slip.

Kinda odd as to why you buy a bike and NOT send the slip in straight away to get the V5 sorted into your name. Embarassed Rolling Eyes

Nothing odd in that. The DVLA form required to send in your green slip and obtain a full V5 states that you should wait 4 weeks before submitting the green slip to them, to give them time to process the paper work. Or pay the £25 fee!

Hell no! I wouldn't expect them to cooperate!

My seller gave me his green slip (new keeper part of the V5) so I typed in the reference number of that into the DVLA vehicle enquiry site. That gives the latest V5 issue date. As my sellers new keeper slip is still the most up to date, that is why it works.

Well, they do try and make it difficult - the reference number on the green slip is a digit longer than on the full V5, but take the first digit off and..... Voilla! Wink

The person you bought the bike off should have down this and payed the fee Before selling the bike...

Check the new keeper sends DVLA a completed V62 form to apply for a new registration certificate. Otherwise the police could contact you about the vehicle.


Time that they got off their arse and sorted the V5 issue.

Just bought a new (to me) car. Sent the new keepers slip to DVLA (on its own) 10 days later V5 is happily sitting in my hands....
Why did the previous owner NOT do this?
