PostPosted: 21:06 - 16 Jun 2015    Post subject: Question about tunnels and speed Reply with quote

Hi guys I wanted to get your opinions on something, I've been riding for over a year and half now (not that long) and whenever I've ridden through tunnels I've always felt a little more paranoid around cars, reason being they usually tailgate more (while doing at least the limit) and I'm not one of those people that hogs the right hand lane but use it on occasion where it's empty due to having to worry less about being rear ended or being sandwiched between cars in the left but on the odd occasion I get an Audi/BMW driver race up behind me and I obviously have two options, try getting out the way to stop the tailgating or speed.

I usually slip in to the left lane but sometimes there's no real space. What I've noticed roughly 90% of the bikers I see who use the tunnel just speed (40-50 mph in 30 limit) and go in between the traffic, while that has it's own dangers and I prefer not too if possible but I can't help but get tempted when put under pressure by drivers around who are also speeding etc

What I'm asking is.....What is the most sensible option in this situation?

Thanks in advanced

Do what feels most comfortable, it's a fair point it's often best to go with the flow.
If you crash in a fireball in there, the smoke might kill off the other guilty drivers too.

In a tunnel, you say?

1. Kill switch off
2. WOT
3. Kill switch on
4. ?
5. Profit

I usually just rev the beans off my bike to make sure it sounds right.

When you get a car up your bum, just press your front brake lever enough to put the light on but not enough to brake.

Wait till the car is very very close.

Repeat till they get sick of keep braking themselves. Works best on nasty wet days when going round a sharply bending tunnel (warning, may cause bad skiddy sounds behind).

Its an overtaking lane.

If you're using it to overtake, fine.

If you're using it so that you "worry less" then hanging's too good for you.

You could just stay in the left lane and if the car behind is following closely then slowly reduce speed to give a gap from the car in front.

Don't go slamming your brakes on and giving wanker signs and getting into some stupid road rage nonsense. Just chill out and get on with you journey, it's so much simpler and less stressful.

Needs a bit more context really but
If you pull into an empty lane and ride at the limit you'll get tailgated
Fact of life whatever you drive/ride.
If you have L plates some drivers will assume you're not going fast enough
whatever speed you're going and tailgate you.
( needs the Toy Story/Buzz lightyear pic with "Arseholes, everywhere arseholes")

I don't see this as tunnel only thing though

tailgating deterrents
laser pointers as brake lights - blind the bastards
inject parrafin into silencer - big smoke
Any old shit coming off yer bike will make people back off
even water, so an old screen wash pump and bottle of old piss
jury rigged with button on bars will get them backing off in horror
Twisted Evil

Seeing the naughty side of 150 in a tunnel is great fun.

Also I no longer have any points on my licence so you should totally take my advice Thumbs Up

Ride more defensively in the left lane. The right lane is for overtaking.

There are four options. The othertwo are: 1) Hold your ground. and 2) Slow down.

I slow down for tailgaters which, notwithstanding my first statement, is both amusing and the correct thing to do.

This is usually my tactic. It's a bit risky in itself sometimes, as if you really have a complete and utter knob end on your tail, you might just wind him up even more. But at the end of the day, at least if he does hit you, less likely to be so serious at slower speed, and he's more likely to be able to stop before that happens anyway. Outside of tunnels, especially motorways and more open roads, I'll sometimes speed up enough to leave the twat behind, let him catch up if he's going to, and repeat. I often find that after a while they get tired of this game and leave a bit more space, but you can never count on it.

Some situations don't have a straightforward, clear-cut answer, and you can only take the best of some bad options. In future, I'd just say stay in the nearside lane on the tunnel approach and all the way through so you don't get in that situation in the first place.

I feed off the rage. It makes me strong.

I once had one finally pass me with a red-faced harridan hanging out of the passenger window screaming and waving her arms about. I waved then mimed licking my finger and marking off a "point" in the air. She nearly assploded.

That will help with sucking your lunch through a straw.

Satisfying as it is, I tend to just pull over and let them get on with it.

Twice it's got the better of me and I've come to a complete halt. One Post Orifice van which I stick by, one coffin dodger who probably had no idea that he was so close - I'm lucky that he stopped and didn't kill me.

Or perhaps he didn't stop. Whooo, you read dead posters.

How do you pull over, in a tunnel, from the offside lane, when you can't get into the nearside lane because of the traffic?

Overtake (you're in an overtaking lane) then pull in.

If not overtaking, why are you in that lane?

OP's post is about this situation happening repeatedly. The world isn't going to change to suit them.

Which is why I said in my first post here to get into the nearside lane before getting into the tunnel, and stay there until through. It's not necessarily something I would do, but the OP seems to show a bit of a lack of confidence, or concern, so that's why I suggested this. He also said, sometimes he feels he can't get into the nearside lane from the offside, as the traffic doesn't allow for it. I can only go by the scenario the OP has given, assuming the traffic is that nose-to-tail that he doesn't find an opportunity to move over.

I quoted Finnian, who said move into the nearside lane, and if that didn't work, then pull in. So I assume he meant pull in to stop.

Thanks for the replies guys, the traffic is nose to tail since it's usually during London peak time and everyone is in a huge rush to get home (esp drivers) two lanes btw and a couple of speed cameras but most people seem to know where they are and slow down at those points, although I have seen a few drivers get flashed by some of them.

Reason why I don't want to just blurt pass through the middle like most bikers do is my commuter doesn't have any sound (Suzuki 250 dual exhaust pipes make after market options super expensive) and drivers VERY rarely feel the need to use their indicators for some absurd reason, I have a horrible feeling one will catch me this way eventually.

Filtering is a piece of cake in the Limehouse. Just do what all the others do.

Cheers Pete I'll give it a shot, it's a bit funny really in the morning going to work I seem to filter better with the flow of traffic it's on the way back I get a bit more paranoid probably due to being tired.

If you're filtering, just be wary where there's a gap in either lane that a car could pull into. Sod's law says (volume 36, section 26D, paragraph 15a) that if you filter past that gap without paying very careful attention, you will get taken out.
