Well, you can put a "I've paid for parking" slip on the dash and expect it to stay there with a bike, so a lot of car parks don't try and charge bikes.
And, if you park vaguely sensibly, you'll be very unlucky to get a ticket on the pavement/whatever most places outside of London.
When you get as rural as deepest South Wales... the number of motorbikes parked between the bicycle hoops at our new shopping centre is usually higher than the number of bicycles... no-one cares ____________________ Honda Varadero 125cc => Suzuki Bandit 650 33bhp => 77bhp =>

I had this conversation with the company next door to the one I work for.
After complaining about the large displays of unmovable sand bags, compos etc in my way so that I wasn't able to gain access to the bike parking area, the second manager attempted to give me a talking to about how bikes aren't supposed to park there and that the bollards are there to demonstrate that it's a public footpath (despite being on private land) and no bikes should be there, and then started going on about how it wasn't his responsibility to provide parking for my bike and that it's the landlords choice, blah fucking blah.
My response was simple "so you're willing to moan about how I shouldn't park here and yet no so long before christmas you had an employee who did the same as me and never made him park elsewhere?"
"Oh no, we don't mind you doing it, it's just that you're not supposed to, you'll have to ride through the parked cars over there and down the footpath and then attempt to manual handle your way into the space".
Ha, up yours.
Anyone who thinks I'm leaving my bike anywhere other than chained to an unmovable object can give me the value of my bike and i'll happily agree, soon see who gives in first.
..
I've never found myself in a situation where I've needed to leave the bike on a pavement unattended for an extended period of time but when i'll always leave it outside the shop I'm in.
City center's main car park has free bike parking, only other car park I've used lifted the barrier when I said "it won't give me a ticket" (despite being willing to pay), you'd have to come across a real arsehole private parking company like NCP to receive a fine for riding around the barrier. |

I found and asked a parking warden what their policy was on bikes - was told they can park for free without displaying a ticket but to park considerately and observe time restrictions.
sounded fair so I found a triangular bit of car park you couldn't get a car on and parked on it - no problems.
Been chucked out of the same NCP car park 4 times in the space of 20 mins as I kept riding round it trying to find the bike parking and failing. ____________________ Looking to pass your CBT / Bike tests in Bury Lancashire? try www.focusridertraining.co.uk Would recommend.

Yes, not the most laissez faire lot.
On the other hand, I'm currently parked off the carriageway where it shows clear double-yellows, directly under a NO PARKING sign, right slap bang outside the Glasgow parkies lair where they emerge from their cocoons in the morning.
One of them has told me that I'm probably on private land just past the boundary of the public highway though, so let's see how that works out. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.
