Someone told me that parking attendants can't put tickets on bikes, is this true? Can bikes park anywhere then?

Are there any areas\local authorities that allow more than one motorbike to park in metered car parking bay for the price of one ticket ?

You could always claim someone ripped it off or it wasn't there when you returned to your bike and had no idea about the ticket, but would probably only have a chance of defense if in an area that was clearly unclear about parking rules.

For this reason I'm limited to the amount of places I take the bike, sometimes it's easier to get on the bus and enjoy my day without having to worry about where to leave it without getting into hastle.

Well, if someone told you that.

Why on earth wouldn't they be able to?

This was the jist of it, but I didn't get where he was coming from, it'd be just as easy to rip one off a car.

Well, you can put a "I've paid for parking" slip on the dash and expect it to stay there with a bike, so a lot of car parks don't try and charge bikes.

And, if you park vaguely sensibly, you'll be very unlucky to get a ticket on the pavement/whatever most places outside of London.

When you get as rural as deepest South Wales... the number of motorbikes parked between the bicycle hoops at our new shopping centre is usually higher than the number of bicycles... no-one cares Smile

I normally pay and don't display. If I get a ticket a quick call to read the P&D serial number is normally enough to squash the ticket. They're normally fine about not displaying it on a bike(carrying it in your pocket), as it could be stolen. Worse case scenario is they will want an email with a photo. No hardship, really is it.

It is when they claim the the terms you agreed to is to have it clearly on display and so you've broken the terms of agreement.

Therefore their penalty profit applied.

That, in my 100% experience, has never happened. When on the phone, they are more than accommodating and understand the need not to leave a p&d tick stuck to the bike.

My mate parked his bike outside his work once and got a ticket, so now when he parks his bike he covers it and puts a chain through it so they cant get it off, and hasn't ever got a ticket since.

If we're talking about 'fines' for parking in contravention of local council regulations then I'm fairly certain they don't actually have to stick something to the bike to levy a 'fine'. The parking attendant just takes a photo, writes a statement, computer does the rest.

BTW, if you're parking off the road, taking your number plate with you will make it hard to fine you Wink

I had this conversation with the company next door to the one I work for.

After complaining about the large displays of unmovable sand bags, compos etc in my way so that I wasn't able to gain access to the bike parking area, the second manager attempted to give me a talking to about how bikes aren't supposed to park there and that the bollards are there to demonstrate that it's a public footpath (despite being on private land) and no bikes should be there, and then started going on about how it wasn't his responsibility to provide parking for my bike and that it's the landlords choice, blah fucking blah.

My response was simple "so you're willing to moan about how I shouldn't park here and yet no so long before christmas you had an employee who did the same as me and never made him park elsewhere?"

"Oh no, we don't mind you doing it, it's just that you're not supposed to, you'll have to ride through the parked cars over there and down the footpath and then attempt to manual handle your way into the space".

Ha, up yours.

Anyone who thinks I'm leaving my bike anywhere other than chained to an unmovable object can give me the value of my bike and i'll happily agree, soon see who gives in first.

..

I've never found myself in a situation where I've needed to leave the bike on a pavement unattended for an extended period of time but when i'll always leave it outside the shop I'm in.

City center's main car park has free bike parking, only other car park I've used lifted the barrier when I said "it won't give me a ticket" (despite being willing to pay), you'd have to come across a real arsehole private parking company like NCP to receive a fine for riding around the barrier.

I found and asked a parking warden what their policy was on bikes - was told they can park for free without displaying a ticket but to park considerately and observe time restrictions.

sounded fair so I found a triangular bit of car park you couldn't get a car on and parked on it - no problems.

Been chucked out of the same NCP car park 4 times in the space of 20 mins as I kept riding round it trying to find the bike parking and failing.

I had a short stint working for them back in 2012.. on the car parks I worked at there was never any bike dedicated bays or areas, some locations bikers used to just chain it to a railing by the entry and in others use to take up whole spaces.

Anything above the first or second floor is generally not advised as the higher the levels you go the emptier it gets and the more teenage scrotes hanging around you get, along side drunks, drug addicts, teenagers have sex in the stairwells etc.

You get 15 minutes from entry (if you take a ticket) to then use at the exit and leave without having to pay, if you ever find yourself unable to go around the barrier and are in the "IDGAF" mood take a fire extinguisher off the wall (should be located near entry) and place it on the weighing pad on entrance, click for a ticket and then drag across the floor past the exit and put it back on the wall... free exit, although probably fineable if you don't have a tinted visor / cover registration before leaving.

Generally advised to stay away from unless you like paying £7+ as soon as you enter.

I tend to pop the cover partially over my bike then push it back so the numberplate is as close to a wall as physically possible. Lock cover through back wheel, snick in gear, disclock on front disc to stop bike being moved forward so numberplate might be observed. Then lock cover through front wheel. I detest paying for parking and avoid having to do so in the cage wherever possible and have NEVER paid to park any of my motorcycles anywhere.

Centre of Manchester, could see a few rows of bikes but couldn't find my way to that part of the car park, kept ending up with walls in the way and having to go up a ramp (all bikes were on ground floor) so it looked as though I was either razzing around for a laugh or scoping out to do damage / theft so I can understand being asked to leave in spite of me asking how to get to where the bikes were parked.

The car park is in an old railway warehouse which is why it has such an odd layout, found it in the end, was accessed via a different entrance on another side of the building to where I'd been trying!

Doncaster MBC parking wardens seem to apply the policy of ignoring bikes unless they're obstructing a pavement so wheelchairs and the line can't get past or preventing access to a property. No ticket required in council car parks. The wardens will even say so if asked, and i quite frequently ask "am I ok parking here?" if there happens to be one of the many traffic wardens lurking close by.

I suspect that it's something to do with an unwillingness to make more dedicated motorcycle bays and having loads of unused bicycle parking and comically enlarged pavements.

A few days after I moved back to Glasgow I couldn't find any parking bays for bikes, so thought my bike would have been safe enough on the pavement, I came back 12 minutes later and there was a parking ticket on it:

had the same argument with one in a local park with a fishing lake
sign said bike parking free in bike bays but there was none

got told it was a standard sign for the councils carparks and couldnt be changed

ended up finding a small gap and parking in it to be told if the bike was still in it in ten minutes it would be fined

wrote to council about it and have a letter saying I can park in a marked bay now for free as there is no bike bays and they would speak with the warden I keep it in my tackle box in case of any other problems

Yes, not the most laissez faire lot.

On the other hand, I'm currently parked off the carriageway where it shows clear double-yellows, directly under a NO PARKING sign, right slap bang outside the Glasgow parkies lair where they emerge from their cocoons in the morning.

One of them has told me that I'm probably on private land just past the boundary of the public highway though, so let's see how that works out. Whistle
