Hi All,

So I have a new bike... YAY!! and I have a problem NO!!!

I got the bike of the father in law for a complete steal so I am not that disappointed and hopefully it should be an easy fix.

Basically during my commute yesterday I noticed after hooning it down the motorway when I hit town the temperature was shooting up sky high when stopping at lights and in slow moving traffic. It got to the point where the warning light came on just before I parked it up at work.. not good. It hit 125C at one point. So today on the way in I am thinking that maybe the fan is not kicking in, sure enough it wasn't. Anyway some googling revealed some common faults and remedies.

1, Fuse, I checked/tested that and it was fine.
2, Relay, swapped with the working headlight one of the same type no banana, headlights still work fan still didn't.
3, Fan motor, Lots of posts online seemed to suggest taking lots of things apart to test but some suggested going in to diag mode and selecting diag code 51. I did this and could hear the relay click but the fan was not turning. Giving it a jump start with my finger got it started and if I did this on the 1st cycle of the 5 tests it would continue to spin up for each next cycle with the momentum from the last.

So my question is. Is my assumption that the fan motor is screwed correct? or could it be there is not enough juice getting to it some how? The fan does sound a bit ropey when going so I think I am right but wanted to lean on the wisdom of "The Workshop" before parting with my hard earned. Smile

Thanks for taking the time!

More to add..

On the way in to work this morning after the temp got to over 100c I gave the fan a spin to try and kick start it but had no joy. Sad

Never had a buggered fan motor on any of my bikes, even the really high mileage ones, not to say it doesn't happen mind, but it isn't the sort of thing that does much work on most bikes so I'd be surprised to see one die.

Relatively easy to test the motor anyway, hook it straight up to a 12v power source (such as your battery) and see if it spins.

Do you know what temperature it's supposed to come on at?

go on here: https://www.600riders.com/forum/index.php there's probably a very detailed write-up. Most people on there have S2s as well.

Whilst you're at at, check (change) your coolant as well, which I know isn't the cause but if you still get problems it's one thing more to rule out.

Cheers guys,

It seems that its quite common on the fz6n to get a stone stuck in the fan and either burn out the motor or pop the fuse.

I went through this last night https://www.600riders.com/forum/garage-mechanical-help/42274-radiator-fan-problem-diagnosis.html which seemed quite comprehensive but I got to step 6.
Quote:
6) To test the Fan Motor take the Volt-Ohm Meter on the DC volts setting => 12 volts and test for battery across the Blue (+) and the Brown (-) wires. If 12 volts of battery go to step 7).If no battery check and replace the fuse, which is under the right side cover. Then repeat step 6).

I was getting nothing over those two wires at any point which was a bit odd. I tested continuity on the fuse and it was fine. At that point I checked the diag 51, as per AdieR 2nd post here and with some help it did spin so I know it is getting power some how Smile

The temp sensor is working as I get correct readings on the dash, I have swapped the relay for a know good one and it clicks as it should during diag mode.

I have it booked in for next Wednesday in case I cant fix it my self. With some considered riding I can keep the temp below critical but if the weather improves I might be back on the train...Noooooooo, please, Nooooooooo

The fan on my old blade was terrible for kicking in late, i wired a switch to it whilst still leaving the fan and sensor connected, if it started getting hot in traffic i just flicked it on till i was moving again.

mmm OK,

I read in a quite few places it should come on at 100C certainly the other day the temp warning light was on and it was still doing jack. I have been looking on fleebay for a 2nd hand fan but there is nothing for my model that I could see. Year before and model after but nothing for mine.

I will try to find the connector for the fan again tonight (its hidden in the frame somewhere) and plum it to 12v to see if it spins. If it does I may fashion a switch.

Thanks again.

On my S2 the fan always kicked in at 100 degrees.

Which means the motor is getting power as it should, but not spinning by itself.

Buy a new fan, move on with life.

what the shuddering fook...

So I had little joy at finding the fan on ebay I thought I would get the part number and google that way https://parts.yamaha-motor.co.uk gave me the part number of BLOWER ASSY (4S8-12405-00-00) which some googling returns some scary shit!

https://www.motosport.com/motorcycle/oem-parts/yamaha/2008/fz6/radiator-hose/blower-assy/4s8-12405-00-00

£242 for a fan! is it made of gold?

Before you spalsh out hundreds remove the fan, disassemble the motor and clean it with good Halfords electric conatcts cleaner, also check the motor brushes - they cost few pounds.

Look up the price of an engine for when you cook the current one?

Just buy a fan and sort it?

FYI, Fan on my FZ6 S2 comes on at around 100 degrees, while riding however temp iis normally 85 degrees and only reaches 100 on warm days in stop start traffic
