Hey guys, bought a cheap cam chain splitter and it shredded threads straight away. Can you suggest a decent splitter and joiner that youve used for cam chains? I fear ill buy another but it will be meant for drive chains instead.

For 94' cb1000
Cheers.[/b]

You probably are not using the tool right.

In order to split the chain you need to grind off completely the pin heads first with a grinder or a dremel tool. If you use dremel you must use orange dremel bits they are the only ones that can grind steel:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/201299630410?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&var=500493529495&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

Only after that use the chain breaking tool. Otherwise you will brake the tool no matter how expensive it is.

If you do it right you can split the chain with any even the cheapest tool like this one:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/220962786642?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

Also note when you use the tool get some pipe to extend the tool handle and use some good long rachet wrench for the tool nut.

Carefully allign the tool and go forward and backwards few times when breaking the pin. You can use some WD40 too.

Again if you grind off the pin heads it will be easy.

You are changing the chain do you?

Also I have no idea what is your chain pins. Generally there are two types of pin heads - soft and hard ones.

For riveting the soft pin head ones you can use chain rivet tool type like this one:

https://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/motorcycle/chain-tools/warrior-heavy-duty-chain-riveting-vice

For hard pin heads you need "Whale" type riveting tool, they are more hard to rivet:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Whale-Brand-Chain-Riveting-Tool-Fits-520-525-530-532-Pitch-Chains-/310845986596

You can call chain manufacturer and ask.

Finally:

Warning : DID do not recommend the cutting and Riveting of Cam Chain at home as incorrect fitment could result in engine seizure and resulting injury Rolling Eyes

Surprised you have to split the chain! On my CBR 600 I just had to take the cam chain sprockets off and drop the chain through the casings.

Try CMSNL for cheaper parts. I had to replace the cam chain sprockets, guides and cam chain, worked out a lot cheaper.

How do you get it off the crank?

Missed that bit. Remove the sprocket as below pic:
