Hi,

I just bought a brand new CBF 125cc, I rode it 25 miles home and then parked it up in the garden. Now it doesn't start, you can hear it trying but it is not firing, if I give it some gas it ticks over and then cuts out soon as the revs cut under 2000RPM.

Is this because of the heat today or do I need to take it back to shop, is it a serious fault.

Brand new bike won't start? I'd take it back.

As has been said; check obvious things but I personally wouldn't bother fiddling around with things or Honda could potentially fob you off saying "your home mechanics broke the bike, you now have no warrantee."

If it doesn't start, you say "Mr Honda dealer, come and recover this broken bike you sold me". One day and 25 miles in, they shouldn't be arguing about that.

But check the obvious stuff (oil, petrol) and if it starts when cooler. Even if it does start and run when cool, I'd be calling your dealer and asking them to check it out in case it is symptomatic of something that is going to cause problems down the line.

Does it per chance have a fuel tap?? Many, many people have forgotten about the silly little fuel tap under the fuel tank. I guess your bike is fuel injected so not sure it has one, but it's worth a punt..

(1) Has the kill-switch been knocked accidentally?

(2) Have you read the start up procedure according to the user manual?

(3) What's happening when you press the starter button?

(4) Have you attempted to start it with the throttle wide open and the stater button?

(5) Sufficient engine oil?

(6) Sufficient petrol?

(7) Take the bike to an empty road, turn the ignition on, put the bike into 2nd gear and keep the clutch pulled in.. now run like hell and let the clutch out slowly..

Does it show any signs of life when the clutch is let out?

(8) Electrics working, indicators, brake lights, front light with ignition on?

(9) Does it have a sidestand switch to stop the bike form being started, if so (and the sidestand is up) is it shorting out?

Does the CBF have a choke? If it runs when you give it some throttle that feels like having the choke on when you don't need it.

"doh".

What's the recommended idol speed in your user manual?

The above basically indicates that it's set to low and is therefore cutting out as the engine is cold and isn't able to stay at a constant speed to warm itself up.

I sense a few runs around the block + idol screw adjustment = running Thinking

They really don't seem to like hot weather.

See...
https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=304515
...and all the links therein, and many many more about CBF125s shitting the bed when it's hot.

But a brand new one? Should just run. Get on to Honda-san and don't be fobbed off with "just needs run in" or similar.

Nicey-nice to begin with, but if they give you any lip, invite them to either make it run or take it back as you'll be rejecting it as not fit for purpose, i.e. use in the precise country and climate and time of year when they sold it to you.

today?

Facebook page for CBF125 owners, quite a few reports of the bikes not liking the hot weather, and not running right.

Will not be remembered fondly. I wonder if the CB125F will do any better.

Made in India yet can't withstand heat, how ironic. Looks like I sold mine at just the right time.

Sorry to hear this Jase, it must be a complete bummer after all the excitement of buying one.

The Indian ones are all carbed and therefore presumably gravity fed, so no pump, TPS or any associated electronomics.

They briefly dallied with selling the FI version over there but it cost more and had no benefits (emissions, kittens) and nobody bought it.

MSX uses a similar fuel pump and is subject to a fuel pump recall. Related?

Very likely.

It's surprising that they've never done a proper recall on the CBF and seems rather shortsighted regarding tarnishing their marque. I guess their solution is to can it in favour of the CB125F and hope for better luck this time.

check fuel/tap. Do nothing else except pick up phone and ring your Honda dealer.

That's what you are paying all that money for, the security of Honda's warranty and back up. Otherwise you might as well have bought Chinese.

Spent ½ an hour attempting to cold start mine on the day of purchase after sitting for some hours, that was a fun process Rolling Eyes Laughing

(Meanwhile work colleagues sit in their cars on the car park watching me run around attempting to get it going).

OP thrown himself in a river with the bike, UPDATE?

If it's a brand new bike you should have HondaCare, they can recover it for you for free back to the dealer. You should have a HondaCare card with your paperwork. Get the dealer to fix it. Probably fuel pump..

Check there's actually petrol in it first though, you did that - right?

If it is brand new, did you take it easy?

Only reason I ask is my first scooter (new) - no-one warned me about bedding it in easy. I did a high speed on the way home. The next day, wouldnt start. Got the dealer to pick it up and take it in and it turns out that I had fubared the piston rings.

You lie, I read this one article this one time...

Moar details. Did you rag it from cold, did it heat-seize at any point, and they explain how moving the pistons up and down a bit more frequently than intended could wreck them in short order?

No lies, I'm very honest, me.

The bike was an Italjet Formula 50 (liquid cooled). No mention on bedding in, just "heres your keys, helmet, insurance details and gloves. See you".

I got lost coming out of Sheffield, and ended up on "The Parkway" which is a dual carriageway with NSL. I was doing an indicated 60-odd MPH (still dont know how) and got home. On the way home from work the next night, I just lost power about 3 miles from home.

Pushed it home (got harrassed by two different sets of police officers asking where I got it from) and spoke with the dealers who picked it up. Three or four days later, I get a call saying that I had split the piston rings and asking if I had been ragging it. No, I said. They said that they would replace all the damage under warranty this time, but not again. When I picked it up, I got told how to bed it in, and did.

The piece of shit still broke down any time there was wet on the road or even if someone looked at it in the wrong way.
