Whats the deal with these? Is it a quick/easy/cheap process to get a second hand stomp etc road legal, or am I better off waiting for one that's already road registered to come up for sale?

I'm thinking of getting one as a second bike to mess about with in the garage and then blast around over summer. I know I've seen a few people on here have them so any experiences would be welcome

EDIT: also if anyone on here has one they're looking to sell let me know, I'd rather not have to risk buying it off some chav with "can do 109 m8"

Last time I checked, you'll need a "certificate of newness" or something else proving the age if you want to avoid a Q plate.

DVLA will want to see that import tax has been paid before registering it.

If you don't have a certificate of Euro 3 conformity (and you won't) then you'll be off for an MSVA test at a DVSA test centre. https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/motorcycle-single-vehicle-approval-inspection-manual

Then you get to try and insure it, when it won't be on any lists.

I'd get an MSX.

With a little creativity and possibly a different set of wheels you should be able to meet the requirements for a motocross or possibly enduro bike, depending on the size of the bike, which skips out the MSVA issues.

However, saving hassle get an already road legal one, or consider buying a road legal frame to add an off-road bike's parts to. However they tend to be expensive as this is a popular option.

MSX is heavy and a bit slow, also covered in expensive-looking plastic.

Looks like you need to claim that it's "intended for use in competition". Why you'd be wanting to road register an offroad competition bike is left as an exercise for the reader.

Because off-road competitions can require you to transit between stages using highways - some enduros and the majority of long distance, some 3 stage trials have road sections.

A large wheeled pit bike could well make quite a good cheap bike for those events, even the enduros for the rider of smaller stature.

It doesn't say 'Vehicles which need road access in order to be used in an off-road competition' just 'vehicles intended for use in competition, on roads or in off-road conditions'

There are pit bike competitions, so it is a bike designed to be used in off-road pit bike racing competitions.

The fact that it does not need to be driven on the road in order to be used in an off-road competition is not relevant.

The plastics are fairly cheap, but are fragile Sad I've cracked one by leaning the bike on my leg as I reached over the other side.

Unfortunately it doesn't use a standard C90 type mount, so you can't just screw on a 140 or 180cc pit bike engine
