My new bike

Hi to all.
I've had an absence from biking for 25 years but this year the resistance has all been to much for me.
The wife as reluctantly allowed me have another bike and even though I have a full licence I thought I'd better start at the bottom again and gain some long lost skills and experience.
So here comes ( please don't laugh
my new to me scooter..Its a little Peugeot 100cc 2t speedfight..Its sixteen years old and owned from new by an elderly chap who's managed to clock up an intergalactic 1200 miles from new!!
After a couple of niggles with the scoot like a loose plug terminal and a block fuel tank vent the bike now runs beautifully. I have done a few 60 mile trips on it and it has coped with no problems. As I'm a more mature rider I've come to respect and accept the capabilities of the somewhat limited power of my bike. Its good for around 55/60 mph but nowadays I'm more mechanically sympathetic and I'm quite happy to plod along at 45 mph with the throttle half open..Sod the cars behind me and just enjoy the ride out is my moto. Its also quite humbling to have virtually every passing biker to give me the obligatory nod. Its funny when their on there 1000cc 200mph rockets and nod at me on my 8 hp chicken chaser..Another thing I'm enjoying is how inexpensive my scoot is to run. £17!!!! to tax it for a whole year. My car is £280 a year. £.4.80 to fill it up and 80mpg. Parking in our congested street is no more an issue. Nipping through the town traffic is a hoot while watching irritated drivers getting all hot under the collar. Even the wife enjoys jumping on the back while ferrying her back and forth to work.
All in all I cant believe I've let 25 years of my life slip by minus a bike in it. Next year I think I will trade it in for a slightly bigger one. Nothing to big mind you..I think a 250 would be more than enough for my needs but for now I will continue my little speedy..
The local police have taken an interest in me to. They see a Scooter with no L plates and often 2 up and they think I'm flouting the law. After a quick chat and show them my full licence they let me on my way. Hopefully the local bobby will start to recognise me and leave me alone.

Hi!

Nothing wrong with a little scoot if you're finding it fun. I'm always impressed by the cost, or lack of, to run smaller bikes. I used to get pulled over a lot on my MT5 and my C70, two up no L plates. I just like small bikes. Even the 4hp those two 'peds have will propel me and a mate along at 30mph fairly easily. On a very good run, I can get 125MPG out of the Cub, my dad has managed 138MPG, but he's a bit more gentle than me, despite being heavier.

Sounds like you got a nice little run-around there.

Hi Andy.
Sorry that I didn't get back to you in the workshop section..I use mini opera on my phone to access the internet and it plays havoc with some web sites like this one.
The immobiliser light came on again today 30 miles into my journey but didn't affect the bike in anyway. Any ideas what could be wrong .

Many thanks for the welcome..
To be perfecly honest I haven't a clue what bike I would like next. I am thinking on the lines of a custom of some sort. Speed is not on my list but more of a relaxed type of bike that will keep up with the flow of traffic...
I was very tempted with the Lexmoto Vixen but all the reviews about Chinese bikes were very mixed with some right old scathing comments. I played it safe and bought a low mileage Peugeot speedfight instead. I know these can be trouble some to but I only paid peanuts for it anyway.
What would your average 4 stroke 125 be like compared to a 2 stroke pug . Are they more relaxing to ride at speed. 50 on my scooter is easily acheived but the engine sounds quite manic. Would the equivalent 4 stroker be more relaxed at this speed ..

As you rightly say I think I will need to progress on to something a little bigger than a 125 next year.
The last bike I owned many many moons ago was an RD 500. The fuel consumption on it was chronic to put it mildly. Before that I had two RD350 lc..
A real hooligans bike in its day. Luckily i survived being the local idiot on a bike that was to fast for my immaturity but sadly many of my friends lost their lives on them. They were the bad old days when passing your bike test was a walk in the park compared to what its like today..It really was like gjving a licence to a kill yourself back then. Today the vast majority of bikers are well mannered and highly professional when it comes to motorcycling. It has changed so much in such a short time .

Damn, I'd kill a man for an RD500, probably their family as well.

But like you say it would be too fast for my level of maturity.

I would probably skip the 125 stage too, not worth it really unless it's something with some poke, like a Mito, or similar, in which case you might as well get a more reliable 250/400 with even more poke anyway.
