 Posted: 08:37 - 06 Jul 2015 Post subject: Little bruv wants a ped. |
 |
|
Quick background story, wifes little bruv is what you might call 'less than fully motivated' at school. He's just done
his GCSEs and a year ago I promised him if he got the 3 Bs he needs to get into college I would buy him
a moped after he turns 16 (This wednesday) and gets his exam results (next month) Then, after his CBT is
done, I'll take him out and give him a few on road supervised rides with me before I hand him over the keys
and send him on his way alone with it.
It does comes with conditions though,
1. He pays for his own CBT, but at a school of my choosing.
2. he doesn't modify its engine/exhaust.
3. he doesn't ever ride it without L plates or carry passengers.
4. he always wears a reasonable amount of kit.
5. he doesn't let his lairy younger brother ride it until he's old enough to and has done his own CBT etc
(in the interest of fairness, I will have to repeat this gesture in about 2 years time when potatofaced youngest
bruv does his GCSEs, he's even more of a slacker than this one is so seeing his older bro hit paydirt may
make him pull his socks up over the next couple of years, we live in hope.)
6. Any dicking about on it that lands him in trouble with the law and I take it back and sell it to someone who appreciates it.
For some reason he listens to me where the same message from his parents would fall on deaf ears.
Anyway, he's knuckled down a bit and been doing his homework etc and it looks like he's on his way to
getting the grades he wants. This means I'm likely to be moped shopping soon.
I had a look last night and thought the Peugeot V clic was a good bet, underseat storage, disc brake and
if I'm getting this right a 4 stroke so no sodding about with oil/petrol mix also shouldn't be as buzzy, noisy
and smokey as a 2 stroke.
But if I'm honest I wouldn't know what the preferred 50cc runaround is these days.
Any help would be great.
Cheers. ____________________ Currently enjoying products from Ford, Mazda and Yamaha

5 ponds says that he reneges on one, some or all of those conditions within half an hour of his first soLo ride.
V Clic seems very utilitarian, which sounds exactly like what you're after. You going new, or pre-abused? ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

I'm sure he will, I was up to all the usual tricks long before I was 16, me and a schoolmate bought a C50 for £15 and a pair of ice skates (absolutely true) and hid it in a garage my parents had but didn't use. Many many lulz were had on that thing, it coped surprisingly well off road
I was thinking used, he will twunt it no doubt. Something like this,
https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201506184434282?search-target=usedbikes&make=peugeot&cc-to=50cc&channel=bikes&postcode=bs312hw&sort=default&radius=1500&page=1&logcode=p
I'll be putting a topbox on it so he can carry his stuff to college, he's about 5'10 and 12 stone
so I'm happy it's not going to be too fast for him, he's not 'laddish' at all and has only ever ridden some
weird electric powererd pushbike at a fair other than that his experience is limited to cycles/skateboards.
30mph attained with no physical effort will still feel fast to him for a good year or two. He also has 2 older
'blood' brothers (24 and 18) who both drive. (only one has a car though) as well as one potatofaced
younger bruv (14) plus the comparitively ancient (Step) bruvva in law being me (42), I'm only 12 years younger
than his Dad. But he doesn't see me as a 'grown up' if you catch my drift. I've been a useful conduit
between him and his mum and dad before when they can't get through to him, like I said, he listens
to me, he can see I have done well and he knows that because I don't have much education, just how
hard I've had to work to get what I do have. I'm quite handy at applying vinyl graphics because
chavvy car modder so could 'sporty' it up for him quickly enough but wouldn't invalidate his insurance
doing so. There's lots of places selling go faster stripes and monster energy vinyls if that's what floats his boat.
My first (legal) ped was a 1985 C reg Bright red Honda City Express.
Anyway, it's character building having a gayped when you're 16. He's already ginger so is pretty much used to
being abused daily so he'll be fine. Besides, having a particularly un butch and un sporty ped just makes
your first bike with gears seem SO much cooler when you get it. My 125 was bought and paid for by
the time I was 16 and a half and the 6 months I had to look at it out of the window every day but couldn't
ride it were torturous. ____________________ Currently enjoying products from Ford, Mazda and Yamaha

Maybe that's something I can do before he takes it home, it will live at mine until I'm happy with his riding
enough to send him away on it. He can come over for lessons in the meantime. ____________________ Currently enjoying products from Ford, Mazda and Yamaha

If people riding a 50cc ped feel vulnerable then they're either riding on inappropriate roads and or their road positioning is shit
As good on paper as those conditions of ped purchase and usage are, as a 16 year old your kid brother knows far more about the world than you do and so will easily be able to come up with reasons why your rules and stupid.
1. #toocoolforschoolracing
2. It's not modified it's been serviced and tuned, don't you know anything?
3. They were there when I set off, must have fallen off.
4. This is a reasonable amount of kit, you just don't understand.
5. Little brah isn't lairy and I'm not responsible for what he does, it's not my fault he took it for a ride.
6. Yeah well, the cops had it out for me, they were being right dickheads so you can't expect me to be nice to them, I'm not gonna respect them if they're rude to me!
Safe yeah. |

As a parent, of teens, I am beginning to despair for the future...
When I was a teenager, before the Berlin Wall came down, living under the threat of Nuclear Holocaust, we were watching "War-Games", "Terminator", Mad-Max" and "Risky Business" & "Ferris Beuller's Day off"....
What are they watching now? U-Tube clips of things recorded on smart-phones of other kids falling off skateboards and cats.. on smart-phones....
My daughter threw a 'leavers' burn the Blazer BBQ a couple of weeks ago.... I have to admit was shitting myself a little bit... I remember My 'Leaver Night'.... BOY do I remember our 'Leavers Night'.. Walking through town with a 5' blond, with 3' of punky hair, who walked up to every-one on the street pretending to be Sweedish and asking to practice her 'English'... the party in the park, and the arguments over what tape ought to be put on Jasons 'Ghetto-Blaster' and the argument when the Geriatric park-keeper stuck an air-rifle out of the parkies hut window and threatened to shoot me if we didn't 'bugger off'.. And another BBQ my mates big-brother held, one week-end when his parents were away, that we sort of gate crashed... well.. we got picked up on the street at 2am and they sort of taking us 'home'... and naked school-girls falling out of first floor windows while the cops were knocking on the door, lads chucking crates of poppers over the neighbors fence.. and half naked 17 y/o big-bruv trying to stop the cops coming in, whilst trying very hard not to commit GBH on either of us!..... So I was a LITTLE bit concerned about having a dozen teenagers in the garden.. with a FIRE...
All evening I was worried, imagining what I would have been getting up to... But like I say, I am beginning to despair for the future.. if the breakdown in civilisation as we know it comes? sod economic melt-down, or nuclear devestation, the ice-caps melting, running out of oil, or a killer zombie virus.... NO! I reckon it will come when there is a glitch in the 8G Mobile network and no-one can find a pre-made 'ap' to fix it.... I got home to find a dozen Zombies (rather soggy Zombies, as it happens) in my back garden, with ghoulish under-chin lit faces all staring intently at fucking smart-phones.. at a PARTY... so the end of civilisation.. the mobile network will go down and they will all be LEFT zombies, staring at thier smart-phones, NOT being told what to do... so they'll just KEEP standing there..
So, I would say, that your best bet to make his cool, is to add a smart-phone holder... and write and 'ap' with your 'rules' in it.. cos they'll do anything a smart-phone tells'em, it seems! ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!
