Can't find piston rings! CRF250L

When I bought the bike 5 months ago the oil stunk of petrol. I flushed it out and put new oil in. Recently it's developed a small oil leak, so I thought I would check the oil level before starting it and the oil level has gone just above maximum in the sight glass, and once again stinks of petrol.

Never done anything like this before but I'm going to give it a go myself.

Only problem I'm facing is I can't find the seal kit anywhere for the CRF250L. Lots of stuff for the CRF250X and CRF250R but not for the L.

Will it be ok to fit rings for an R or an X onto my L or will I run into problems?

Is there anything else I should consider doing whilst I am inside the engine?

As I said I've never done anything like this before so I'm going to be learning as I go along.

I would be asking why petrol is getting into the cylinder and not being burnt? Petrol will get past good rings, I dont think it is the problem.

How does engine run? compression good? burning oil? oil colour?

Have you checked the carb. Reason I ask is it can overflow and head down to the sump. Sounds more logical than rings.

As above, it sounds like the fuel is overflowing from the carb and going into the cylinder. If you take the air filter off, you may be able to see it coming up through the emulsion tube/main jet. It's not a good thing on a two stroke, it'll wash all the oil off the piston, rings and the inside of the cylinder. What type of fuel tap have you got, if it's a vacuum one, it could be stuck open....or is it left on "prime"?

Which leads me to think it could be a leaking injector?

The colour of the oil is like apple juice.

I haven't done any test but the engine seems to run ok, there is a slight smell of petrol from the exhaust when the bike is running but I'm guessing that's normal?

Vincent and Paddy, thanks for the replies, it's a fuel injected 4 stroke, but surely the same thing can happen through the injector?

Do a compression test and see if anything looks odd before ripping the head off.

It's going to be burning a lot of oil well before petrol would be contaminating the oil past bad ring's, I would look at why there is too much petrol getting to the cylinder in the first place, leaking injector or possible faulty temperature sensor causing it to run mega rich maybe.

Having a quick look through that, the O2 sensor may be worth checking.

So I pulled the injector and the tip is completely dry, so does that rule that one out?

I have noticed that there is a cable spliced into the rear light with a little splicing connector on the other end going to nowhere. If I am correct this is where people put aftermarket fuel controllers.

If it has had one in the past could it have anything to do with it?

I really wouldn't have a clue on testing o2 sensors or bridging connections, it's all like reading Japanese to me Sad

Best I could do is buy a new sensor, fit it and hope for the best.

No, rear light feed is often used for relays and such, to give switched power for accessorys. If its a splice, I recommend removing and doing it properly as they are shit.

Fuel injector could be leaking. System is usually pressurised about 50psi. I imagine any leak would be very slow but over a long time could be significant. It does not take much petrol to make oil smell, probably only a tiny amount.

Prime fuel rail and injector off the bike?
