MPs given go ahead for 10% pay rise to £74,000

MPs' salaries will rise from £67,060 to £74,000, the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority has announced.
The 10% pay rise has been approved despite Downing Street and a succession of MPs saying it was "not appropriate".
IPSA chairman Sir Ian Kennedy said that MPs' pay had been a "toxic" issue "which had been ducked for decades".
He said the pay rise would not cost any money because it was being combined with cuts to expenses, pension and severance payments for MPs.
The independent watchdog, set up to bring in and run a new expenses and pay system for MPs after the expenses scandal of 2009, says in future MPs' pay would rise in line with average rises in the public sector.

MP's expenses are just as expensive now as they were during the 2009 expenses scandal.

They say it won't cost us an additional penny, so we can expect the expense claim total to be reduced from £21,980,521.17 to £17,469,521.17 (£4,511,000).

Would anyone like to place bets that this won't reduce by anything like that amount??

I'm still staggered that 650 people can cost the country £65,569,521.17 last year. That's £100,100 a year.

I say just pay them £100k a year in today's money (+ inflation thereafter), completely scrap their expenses, second homes and all that additional fluffy bullshit (they can pay for it out of their wages like everyone else does), ban them from having any additional source of income - taking any backhanders should be viewed as treason and should be punished by death.

Unless it interferes with there duties then why can't they take on extra work?

I wouldn't like to have a job were there told me I can't take on extra work provided it didn't conflict with the current job.

Because it is a minefield of conflicting interests.

Company A has an interest in Proposal X. They offer the MP a 'job' or some other tangible benefit. The MP accepts because they are allowed. They are persuaded to vote in favor of company A.

or:

Company A has an interest in Proposal X. They offer the MP a 'job' or some other tangible benefit. The MP refuses because they can't accept or they will lose their job. Company A is now in the spotlight for trying to buy votes. MP votes in a way to best serve the public.

Besides, being an MP should be a full time job anyway, they should have very little time to be taking on second and third jobs.

easy soloution
do away with second homes, take over / build a hotel type dorm for MP's that need to travel
make them use oyster cards instead of limo's & cabs ( I have to pay my own bus fare to work)
cut subsidised food / drink (I have to buy my own lunch & Beer)
few other tweaks would save millions Thumbs Up

At the end of the day there is only 650 of the bastards, you could pay them a mil each and it would still only cost 0.65bn Which would be bloody good value if the actually run the country properly.

Moaning about MP's salary is just diversion tactics IMO, they are too few in number to cause too much damage to the public purse.

A *nice* hotel / apartment complex within easy walk of Westminster that has a permanent room/suite in it for each MP. Build it well. Furnish it well. Give them 1000 square feet each if you want. Each MP gets to use it rent-free as long as they are an MP. Each has an allocated apartment so they can keep their stuff in it. 650 space multi-storey car park next door, for their sole use, again free.

Not even slightly stressful (it's really handy for work). And it'd do away with all that second-home bollocks that's just a free house gravy-train at our expense.

Can you imagine the kind of crazy decisions they'd make if they had to deal with the same tiresome problems as the governed?

I'm just glad that they can de-stress by expensing 'refreshments' in any of their 8 subsidised private bars.

Sounds like your suggestion would likely cost a lot more in reality.

You'll need some pretty good sound insulation etc to make sure that people coming and going at all times don't disturb others.

If they bought up the old London City offices across the river they could turn that into the 'hotel'. MP's already have a parking place in the carpark under the parliament building, the exercise walking over the bridge would do them good.

It would certainly stop expenses and two homes fraud.

Why is that difficult, Its something every good Hotel already has. Go to an airport hotel and see if it's noisy.

You'll also be further insulating politicians from 'the public' - now any time they're in London they are stuck in political circles all the time.

As if they are accessible to the public now? And what's the difference with them staying in the parliament hotel, or their own private (publicly funded) 2nd homes in London.

Rented homes in London. Which are more likely to be surrounded by people that aren't politicians as is their journey in, even if it's just a cab driver.
Not the public's access to politicians (which is actually pretty good), but the other way around.

If they're going to rub shoulders with the proletariat, I'd prefer it to be the ones that elected them.

Tell you what, sell Westminter off to the Arabs or Russkis, use the proceeds to buy them a laptop with a camera and some video conferencing software with a voting function, they can have their little tantrums in the comfort of their own, single home, paid for with their fixed salary.

They don't really debate anyway, not even in committees, they just make self-aggrandising speeches. YouTube can deal with that aspect.

I find my "New" MP very accessible
you can register for an email and you get messages when she is holding public meetings
or there are events happening. also a summary of what she is doing in wastemonger and what votes she took part in
and actively asks for input from her constituents

I still think a central hotel would be far cheaper than a couple of hundred second homes
my last mp (Labour) was claiming £20k between housing & travel in London
and a further £15K for his Wife "Office Staff" to name a few "Expenses" he was claiming

I was thinking more along the lines of timber frame and a bit of plasterboard. Maybe with some wadding inside. Y'know, to match the party walls in the "affordable" terraces they're expecting their subjects to half-buy half-rent.

If they have no extra income then it should help to prevent policies for personal gain.

If needs be, massively increase their pay, and pay it for life. Just no extra income at all for life.

Nope, just get reasonable with a decent non corrupt level of pay. And remove any need for other income.
