un-sticking speedo cable from speedo drive

Need to replace the speedo cable on my ZZR 600, tried this morning and it's not a bad job to get to the back of the clocks to do it however the muppet that I am, I didn't attempt to disconnect the end that's had 2 years of motorway spray and road salt thrown at it which is quite well attached to the speedo drive.

Normally I'd just blast it with Gunk's 'liquid wrench' or similar penetrating oil, leave 20 mins, blast again and unscrew in an hour but the proximity to the brake disk makes me a bit wary of this approach,

If I stick a plastic bag or something to cover the disk will I be ok or is there a better way of getting this un-stuck?

If you've got time to spare, and you're worried about overspray, take the wheel off and soak the whole drive thing in a bath of penetrating oil.

Alternatively buy some penetrating oil that comes in a can, not a spray!

Is the drive held in place by a separate screw, or does the cable end just screw on to the drive housing?

screws onto the drive housing which sits between wheel and fork leg like a spacer,

unfortunately the bike is needed daily for work so will need to put a bit on each day until I can get it off.

New drive unit on order from e-bay as it's simply sheared off, looks as though the whole lot's seized somehow

another thing to keep on top of greasing I guess.
