I'm getting right royally fucked off now.

3 punctures in less than a month.

The latest one I can't actually find where the air is coming out, tried with water, no bubbles anywhere.

What's the average puncture rate round these parts?

(perhaps should be in Dear Auntie... I don't know)

I have them every few years or so, due for one soon. Normally I have slime or the like in my tyres so it is easy to prevent or detect punctures. Just haven't got round to it this year.

Are you riding in the gutter?

Do you know what is causing the puncture?

I go years without getting punctures.

I've done 30k miles, these are the only punctures I've had. I don't ride in the gutter I tend to ride in the outer wheel track, or closer to the central white line.

Went out and had another poke about, found a thin slither of stone. Seems that's where it is.

Have you checked the valve?

I stopped to help a guy last Saturday who had a puncture on a Honda super-scooter, he was stuck on Ebbsfleet roundabout. He had a can of tyre weld ready to go but the tyre was off the bead and anyway we couldn't find any sign of the cause so instead of putting the gunge in there I got a canister from my bike's puncture repair kit and seated the tyre got it partially inflated. I told him to follow me to Sainsburys to pump it properly but before he could get on the bike it was flat again.
So we used the can of tyre weld and it pumped the tyre up. No sign of any leaking so we rode to Sainsbury's filling station and inflated the tyre fully then used the water tap to check for leaks. Nothing, it was completely air tight. Now since it is very odd that a tyre should deflate instantly and then hold air I started poking about and found that the 90-degree rubber valve had split at the base. When you bent it a little bit it leaked profusely.
Anyway, I got him to follow me to my house and went looking for a new valve. Tyre place down town only had car-length ones so we fitted one of those but it was too long and the end of the valve hit part of the hub once every turn. In the end I pulled the valve out of my spare 'busa back wheel and fitted that for him, go him on his way.

Goop is good.

When I eventually changed my back tyre, I found there were 4 small punctures, but Goop had taken care of it and I wasn't aware.

Probably won't help my current dilema though - new tyre keeps breaking the bead and slipping off the rim Sad

Coincidence as I left my bike in the shop for puncture repair this morning. They rang a bit ago to tell me it's not repairable and I need a new tyre.

Tyre is only 1k miles old and managed to get a drill bit in it.

only ever had 1 on the motorbike, and that was due to riding over a section of the car park the lads use to run up and repair some machines. Now i avoid that area and come in slow looking for screws and nails.

Had several on the mtb, mostly due to myself not clearing up properly at home.

Basically all have happened where i park, maybe check this out.

Had a couple over two years. Both in tyres that were getting a bit low on tread anyway. So figures I guess. Also had a loose valve once, which totally foxed me as a slow puncture for ages.

Do you ever inspect the tyres and prise out all the tiny little bits of stone that are embedded in them? I was told this was good practice, as otherwise they remain and gradually get pushed deeper and deeper as the tread wears and can eventually cause a puncture. Can anyone back this up, or is it just urban myth?

Does this stuff only work pre puncture, ie can you put it in after you get one and then pump it up and "Yay, fixed!"?

I inspect them every time I go to get on the bike, although I don't dig all the stones out unless I'm at home.

I have used it on cars, twice, after getting a puncture.

I converted my last 4 cars to run on LPG, and the gas tank sits where the spare wheel should be - so I carry a half-litre of Goop and a 12v inflator instead.

It would be less practical to do that on my bike, so the tyres normally have the Goop in them from new - or at least they will, as soon as I can get the rear one to seat properly on the rim.

I went for years without getting a puncture then hit a patch a couple of years ago where I got 3 in the space of 2 months.

The first one was bad - fast rear deflation at 50mph on the North Circular on a Friday. Replaced the tyre and 1 week later discovered it flat with a nail in it - not repairable. 7 weeks later exactly the same thing - it's what happens when you filter in London - the front tyre lifts the debris and the rear tyre gets the puncture.

My front tyre has a slow puncture at the moment - losing 20% of its pressure on a weekly basis. Quite manageable until the MOT in October!

I got my first puncture on my first day of riding after passing my CBT.

Went out on my GN125 into what is essentially the Yorkshire Dales (not really within the official park boundary but it's much the same), and after coming over a small hill I knew very well indeed, everything went spongey and sluggish at the back, the bike started weaving around weirdly and I knew something was up. I came to an awkward, slow, weaving stop at the side of the road, surrounded by grass, countryside and no help in sight. Turned out I had a 'very fast' puncture. Found a thick, bent rusty metal thing in the tyre.

I was stranded there for a short while, then a doddery old farmer drives by with his old Hilux and a trailer. He pulls over and sees what's up, I tell him I've a flat tyre. He offers me a lift into nearby Masham, telling me he I'll have to sit "int'trailer" because his dogs "int'frunt". He had a very strong local Yorkshire farmery accent.

I showed the farmer the thing that had given my the flat tyre. He looks at it a moment then says, "Ah that's a stapple thar'is, you've gorra stapple in yer tyre."

Stapple....?

It then dawns on me, I had a staple in it. One of these

https://usebin.org/image/1c7b19dd-ec5f-3df1-5530-45f8b060e452/smp_sdc_0183_fence_staple.jpg

He gave me a lift into Masham, saying it was to prove the local garage owner that he was actually a good person who does do good deeds (I guess they were friends or something). I sat on top of some hay in the trailer with my bike for the couple of miles into the village, where he took me to this garage with a wanker of an owner (who I'd dealt with before) who said he doesn't do bikes, then told me to try another smaller garage nearby. I wheeled my bike a few hundred metres to this other place, where the guy tells me he also isn't really supposed to work on bikes, but he does it anyway, gets the tyre off, plugs it and I'm good to go.

Faith in people restored Thumbs Up

Never had any other punctures apart from that.

According to British Tyre Manufacturer's Association. Almost all or at least most 'performance' (V) bike tyres are not repairable.

https://www.btmauk.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/Minor-repairs-to-passenger-car-and-light-van-tyres.pdf

But I have plugged many a V rated back tyre and ran it to the wire afterwards.

If the rayon/wire belting is injured then it's wise to scrap it as the broken ends can work at the rubber until it fails again which may be catastrophically the next time. Shifty

Is it the correct size for the rim? 180/55/17 The last pair of numbers 17 is the rim diameter in inches which is sometimes marked on the rim.

Or the person who fitted the new tyre has used the wrong bead lube.

There are mongs out there who think grease if OK for tyre fitting. Shocked

Spinning on the rim will upset the balance too. Sad

I went for about 10 years without a puncture then had 3 in about 800 miles. After that, I went another 5 years without one but I've had 3 this year.

It's a PITA but I put it down to the amount of building work going on around here.

I've never really used any lube, maybe a thin smear of washing up liquid with water.

Assume you've popped it back off all round, then smashed 50psi into it and bounced it around a bit?
