The trouble is, that there are three test 'schemes' one for each licence entitlement, and each has each with three parts for the 'test'.
Essentially, you have to complete all three 'parts' of the test;
(after precursor of completing a CBT to validate provisional entitlement of licence)
1/ Motorcycle Theory/Hazard
2/ Motorcycle Module 1 - 'Playground' maneuver's practical
3/ Motorcycle Module 2 - 'Public Road' riding exam
For each and every 'entitlement' you want on your licence.
Three 'entitlements' exist:
A1 - 125 'only' licence
A2 - 33Kw/45bhp 'Restricted' licence
A - Unrestricted, ride what you like, licence.
Where historically there was only 'one' motorcycle licence... you did your test and that was it... then they started trying to sub-divide it...
BUT it DOES make more (bureaucratic) sense IF you think of the entitlements as distinct and separate licences, like 'Car', 'Bus' and 'Lorry' licences.. where if you wanted to get that group, you'd expect to do the full suite of tests for that category. It's just a bit daft, that the motorcycle theory is the same regardless of the group you are going for, and the tests are exactly the same, bar the bike you take them on.. at the moment....
Googly, is the difference between 'Accelerated Access' and 'Direct Access' applicable to the RWYL 'A' entitlement, which have sort of swapped defanitions since the 3DL changes in Jan 2013.
(Before then "Direct Access" allowed you to test for the RWYL'A' entitlement 'directly' by being over 21 and taking tests on a 'big-bike'. there was no A2 licence; but if you were under 21 or took the tests under 'standard' rules on a 125, you got a full A licence with a ">25Kw/33bhp" restriction, with date of enforcement until 2 years after pass date. while 'Accelerated Access', was basically that you could do DAS if you became old enough before your restriction period lapsed)
NOW however, 'Direct-Access' is the 'normal' route to any motorcycle licence group; on age eligibility, be it 17 foir an A1, 19 for an A2 or 24 for a RWYL 'A'... turn up, do all three tests, with practicals on bike meeting requirements for group.
Accelerated Access, applies ONLY to the RWYL'A'; IF you have already obtained an A2 licence via Direct-Access... AND, if you have held the entitlement for at least two years; then you may re-test for the RWYL'A'... and it doesn't matter how old you are, but does provide possibility to get RWYL'A' at 21, three years early, if you do A2 straight away at 19.
But, if you were 23 when you did your A2, when you turn 24, you can upgrade to RWYL 'A' via Direct-Access, 'cos you are old enough... BUT demands all three tests, its STILL the Direct-Access scheme. If you don't want to have to re-do the theory, then you have to wait it out until you have had A2 the full two years, to qualify for 'Accelerated Access'.
Exemption form needing a valid Motorcycle Theory cert, if you test for RWYL'A' under 'accelerated' access rules is a bit of a quirk.. apparently the same exemption is not offered to any-one who obtains an A1 licence and wishes to 'upgrade'.
Anyhow, point is, 'new rules' for new licences, and they wish to treat the three possible motorcycle licence entitlements as discreet, separate categories, like car, lorry and bus... but haven't got round to making up discretely different tests for each of them .... yet .... ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!
