PostPosted: 16:40 - 03 Aug 2015    Post subject: Module 1 test confusion Reply with quote

My son got his A2 licence last September he is 24 this September and wants to do his A licence. The instructor asked a girl in the test centre today would he have to sit his off-road test again and she said yes. Is this right or is the girl mistaken? He passed his mod 1 in August and passed the mod 2 September. When he took the mod 2 test he asked the examiner would he have to reset the mod 1 test next year? He said that he would just have to apply to reset the mod 2 test that the module one would cover him. Hence the confusion. Does anyone know the answer?

This. If his theory has ran out he would also have to renew his theory too as he will not have held a full A2 licence for 2 years. He will still have to sit both module 1 and module 2 on the higher capacity bike.

He won't need to do theory again if he has an A2 license...
But mod1 abd 2 are needed on a bigger bike

He will if he has turned 24 before holding his A2 licence for 2 years and his theory has expired.

EG: Little Jimmy has had his A2 licence for 2 years, he does not need to do his theory

Little Bobby just turned 24, he has held his A2 licence for 1 year and his theory has expired, he needs to renew his theory before he can do module 1 and 2.

Yes it is confusing and no it does not make sense but they are the rules. Believe me I have had to explain this very thing to someone yesterday after he passed mod 2. In his case he will not be 24 for another 3 years but can do his A licence in 2 years time and will not have to do his theory again.

The trouble is, that there are three test 'schemes' one for each licence entitlement, and each has each with three parts for the 'test'.

Essentially, you have to complete all three 'parts' of the test;
(after precursor of completing a CBT to validate provisional entitlement of licence)
1/ Motorcycle Theory/Hazard
2/ Motorcycle Module 1 - 'Playground' maneuver's practical
3/ Motorcycle Module 2 - 'Public Road' riding exam
For each and every 'entitlement' you want on your licence.

Three 'entitlements' exist:
A1 - 125 'only' licence
A2 - 33Kw/45bhp 'Restricted' licence
A - Unrestricted, ride what you like, licence.

Where historically there was only 'one' motorcycle licence... you did your test and that was it... then they started trying to sub-divide it...

BUT it DOES make more (bureaucratic) sense IF you think of the entitlements as distinct and separate licences, like 'Car', 'Bus' and 'Lorry' licences.. where if you wanted to get that group, you'd expect to do the full suite of tests for that category. It's just a bit daft, that the motorcycle theory is the same regardless of the group you are going for, and the tests are exactly the same, bar the bike you take them on.. at the moment....

Googly, is the difference between 'Accelerated Access' and 'Direct Access' applicable to the RWYL 'A' entitlement, which have sort of swapped defanitions since the 3DL changes in Jan 2013.
(Before then "Direct Access" allowed you to test for the RWYL'A' entitlement 'directly' by being over 21 and taking tests on a 'big-bike'. there was no A2 licence; but if you were under 21 or took the tests under 'standard' rules on a 125, you got a full A licence with a ">25Kw/33bhp" restriction, with date of enforcement until 2 years after pass date. while 'Accelerated Access', was basically that you could do DAS if you became old enough before your restriction period lapsed)

NOW however, 'Direct-Access' is the 'normal' route to any motorcycle licence group; on age eligibility, be it 17 foir an A1, 19 for an A2 or 24 for a RWYL 'A'... turn up, do all three tests, with practicals on bike meeting requirements for group.

Accelerated Access, applies ONLY to the RWYL'A'; IF you have already obtained an A2 licence via Direct-Access... AND, if you have held the entitlement for at least two years; then you may re-test for the RWYL'A'... and it doesn't matter how old you are, but does provide possibility to get RWYL'A' at 21, three years early, if you do A2 straight away at 19.

But, if you were 23 when you did your A2, when you turn 24, you can upgrade to RWYL 'A' via Direct-Access, 'cos you are old enough... BUT demands all three tests, its STILL the Direct-Access scheme. If you don't want to have to re-do the theory, then you have to wait it out until you have had A2 the full two years, to qualify for 'Accelerated Access'.

Exemption form needing a valid Motorcycle Theory cert, if you test for RWYL'A' under 'accelerated' access rules is a bit of a quirk.. apparently the same exemption is not offered to any-one who obtains an A1 licence and wishes to 'upgrade'.

Anyhow, point is, 'new rules' for new licences, and they wish to treat the three possible motorcycle licence entitlements as discreet, separate categories, like car, lorry and bus... but haven't got round to making up discretely different tests for each of them .... yet ....

Oh bugger.... Well that sucks...i thought I did my research correctly... but if I'm wrong and your right, which didn't surprise me... then I'll have to wait 2 years instead of just being 24, since I passed 2 weeks ago and will be 23 soon and 24 before 2 years.

The fact you have to do theory again agree a full car license is stupid as well. 😤😬

Thanks lads for clearing that up for me. My son is not happy to have to do another two tests at the price of it all. after paying about £750 for all last year. but he will just have to grin and bear it.

You are and I am. I am a DAS instructor, it is my job to know this kind of stuff.

You can start A category DAS the day you turn 24. If your theory is still in date then you can use that. If your theory runs out then you need to either re do the theory or wait until you have had category A2 for 2 full years.
