Here we go again!
On the road (Mod 2) lifesavers are for when you change lane position, to check there is nothing in the blind spot you are moving into.
You do not need to do a lifesaver when pulling away in traffic, or at lights because you are not moving over, just forwards. Do a quick mirror check, that's all you need. Ignore any other advice you get.
Lifesavers are for pulling away from the kerb, u turns, changing lane position. Mirror checks are for changes in speed. |
Thats fine, its just looking at the MOD 1 tests on youtube, they're checking both sides before moving off. I just wanted to know if this was or was not the same for the Road test.

Trying to get in as much practice as posible before my DAS corse next month, but have a query on the lifesavers.
I know on MOD1 its Lifesavers both sides before moving off, but is this the same on MOD2? Say you're sitting in traffic, you come to a stop. Before pulling off, lifesaver left then right?
Thanks all, just want to get into good habits now.

Just don't believe everything you read on the internet about life savers. I did that and got shouted at by the instructor on my first training ride, because I was doing way too many of them and it destabilized my riding.
What really sorted me out after that was to ride behind the instructor and watch what he was doing, including life savers, I just copied him and it made me a much better rider, so I'd recommend that to anybody. If you've only ever ridden on your own or in front of an instructor you're missing the vital step in your training of actually seeing what you're meant to be doing, as opposed to just being told. I was surprised how few life savers he actually did, vs. just checking the mirrors.
Anyhow to answer your question, having just done my mod 2 last week, I did the lifesaver over both shoulders thing after stop and passed, so you can't go wrong with that one at least. One week with my own bike now though, I more often than not just check the mirrors though , unless I'm turning left or right after a light. |

I thought this thread was about something else too, my lifesaver checks are
1. making sure the curtains are properly closed
2. That the Mrs has been out at least 10 minutes and hasn't forgotten anything.
3. Glop mop is in reach before I get too carried away.
