They don't make a profit. Wink

As for "decided not to pay any corporation tax in this country", why would anyone pay more tax than the very minimum required? Confused

So Clarkson and his sidekicks have been given £160 milion to make a TV series for Amazon . As Amazon decided not to pay any corporation tax in this country for many years....even though they make £billions, could this money have been destined for this countries treasury and used for things like Libraries, swimming pools, health care, education, charities, etc, etc?

No, because either way the treasury wouldn't be getting it.

However, Clarkson & Co. will be paying tax on their earnings...

Thats like saying you pay your VED and only use 1 road when you have many many many other roads available to you.

£50 cheaper than a TV license, and the Beeb doesn't even throw in next day delivery!

Yeah, Amazon did $90bn last year - in turnover. Net income was a meagre $240m.

In fact, with the cheap prices you pay for stuff from Amazon coupled with the money they save in dodging corporation tax effectively makes them a modern day Robin Hood. Sort of.

Will subscribe.

Libraries is probably the wrong word for them. Universities have libraries, and they contain books, and people use them to study. Public libraries mostly contain Eastern Europeans and homeless people, all there using the internet or sitting around, and the odd pensioner reading a book.

You're going to pay? Fair enough. I'm not. I'm going to torrent it.

I might be mistaken here, but isn't the tax fiddle used by Google, Amazon, Ebay, Facebook, Starbucks etc, purely allowable because of our EU membership?

I suspect the "Double Irish" and "Dutch Sandwich" tax avoidance is an EU thing, where a company can register anywhere in the EU (Ireland has low corporation tax) and trade anywhere else in the EU?

If we left in the EU, surely we could enforce out own taxation laws on these companies to pay UK tax if they trade here?

Yes it is the EU's fault, although we do have our own tax havens (Jersey, Gibraltar), and the City of London is probably a leading centre for advice on dodging tax.

Technically true. In reality though it's only 'not-profit' because it's not 'left-over' money, they just spend it on buildings to reduce profit and hence tax burden.
